It takes a lot of hours to wear down cam lobes. Are you just guessing this diagnosis based on experience? I have never seen an engine not run as a direct result of worn cam lobes.

Do you think OEM parts in general, are 10 times the quality of aftermarket? I have had good success with aftermarket parts over the years. In this case, simply bypass the anti-afterfire solenoid on carburetor, and no need to purchase new part.

By doing some cross checking online, the belt size can be fairly easily determined. $85 these days sounds reasonable for an OEM belt, especially if the aftermarket belt is only slightly less in cost.

Pb Blaster or equivalent is your best bet. Some stuck or rusted cables will free up, and some won’t. When it won’t, just replace it.

Sounds like it ran out of oil and scored the piston, rings, and cylinder. Will not be easy locally to find a shop that will rebuild your engine.

The issue, other than the model number, is where is it leaking oil, and what exactly is “a hard to turn spot?’ You will find that either buying a new replacement engine, or having it rebuilt in a 26 year old mower is expensive.

Deck can be slightly bent or spindle mounting point is slightly bent. Obviously check blades for straightness. A 1/4” out is not great, but if you can’t get it closer, not the end of the world.

I always pitch the front of deck on riding mowers 1/4” lower than the rear. This not only makes common sense, it is what every service manual states.

Water in the hydro oil will really reduce the performance. I drained two sealed transaxles in an older Hustler zero turn. I sold the unit to a customer and he paid to have this done. What a difference it made immediately in how responsive the zero turn was with fresh oil and no water in it!

Trickle charging your mower battery at 2 amps about once a month throughout the year will extend the life probably by about double. Most folks don’t do this and therefore buy a new battery more frequently.

I sharpen blades nice and sharp. They only get dull from there, so why not sharpen them nice and sharp? I realize the blade is more susceptible to nicks, etc. the sharper they are. I do not balance blades.

Adjustment nut is larger and rides on teeth making the deck go up and down. Other smaller nut locks deck height in place. If adjusting nut is stripped, simply loosen lock nut and raise or lower deck by hand.

Walking backwards when trimming is both slower, and potentially dangerous for safety. If right handed, you walk forward and lock the trimmer close to your body and line throws the grass away from beds. Takes some getting used to and practice.

In order to really give it a good look, you will need to remove the deck and inspect the belt, pulleys, line of travel, and belt tension. Plus, you can test it and easily replace the drive belt if it comes off again until you hopefully get it figured out.
