Winters coming.

Soon there there won't be much in the way of grass and mowers to talk about. If this years like last it might get a little boring around here listening to people talk about snow removal. I thought JD was going bonkers when he posted this little gem last February

http://www.lawnmowerforum.com/site-discussion/2025-forum-departure.html

Anyway....I thought it might be a good idea to invite you to post some pictures of your local flora and fauna (that means plants and animals...mower manic). Since I live in Florida I don't get to seen much in the way of fall and winter, leaves and snow and such.
This might help keep things going and avoid cabin fever.:mur:

This was a big surprise for me. I came home last week and saw 17 Canada geese on my pond. Never, ever has this happened. They have been here almost every night for the past week. This was taken in early in the am. I'm pretty happy with my new flock.:drink:
Wonder what it means for the weather this winter.

Look up the term "bug" in the dictionary, it means to "annoy, bother, anger, etc". In no way did I use the term bugger to imply I am a gay person...oh yes, I feel MUCH better now revealing why I stay on LMF...to annoy, bother, pester, etc.

"Bug" is a verb, like "run". If you bug then you could be refered to as the "bugger". Jusr as if you run you would be refered to as the "runner". It's quite clear actually. Not to difficult to understand.

You made no mistake, your grammer is correct, the word has 2 meanings, maybe more. What it means in Europe or Canada is of little consequence.
This is a witch hunt, a distraction, an ad hominem, nonsense, well beneath the intellect of the one who propagated it. Granted he actually made no assertions, they were implied.
At any rate this thread is about photo's..so get to it.

Yeah it's always alot of water. Niagara river is not really a river it's a strait between lake Erie and lake Ontario. Lived here my whole life and never been on the maid of the mist. Grew up sailing on lake Ontario though so spent good amount of time on the water. It's def a big part of my life.

Hermit crab update

I know everyone has been wondering about the Hermit Crab:rolleyes:.
Well I turns out that after a little research i was able to discover that the shell this crab was using as a home is the shell of the "Candy Cane" cone. This particular cone is only found around the island of Hispaniola ( Haiti/ Dominican Republic).
So he either ordered it i online or this cone came from the Dominican Republic! How did it make it from there to here?
Good question...It's about a 600 mile trip across the Atlantic ocean. Using my powers of deduction....I'm guessing that this crab was someones pet that escaped. I am now scratching my head as to exactly why I decided to release it where I found it. I was busy with more important stuff last Sunday and did not put enough thought into that decision.
So there is your update.

Winter is an understatement - been like below 50 at nite last couple weeks - my blood's too thin for the cold now after all the years of living in the snow belt up north....brrrr......folks will be down in a couple weeks, pop will say " This is shorts and t shirt weather!"

Look like this?
It's a cuban tree frog. Tier skin contains chromatophores, enabling them to change color. They are considered an invasive species. They are a problem in the native habitat as they are toxic and have no predators and they eat the native frogs or crowd them out.

As distasteful as some find it, I actually shoot squirrels when they are on the deck or roof. I try to chase them off with a low powered BB gun that just smarts a litlte when it hits them, but when they get too persistent or start doing damage I break out the heavier artillery and put them down. They can do a lot of damage, especially if they get on the roof and find a way inside your attic. I didn't have the heart to shoot that little girl though. I was just so astounded when I looked out the window and saw how she'd defeated the bird feeder I just couldn't shoot her, though I did chase her off with the BB gun just on principal.

We don't have that problem here, not with squirrels anyway.

Being that remote increases the costs of building exponentially. There's is a trade off, you don't have to look at your neighbors everyday.
I'm studying to map of Alberta now, I was there in 1985, Calgary. that was before the Olympics. You can't get much more remote than the northern reaches of that province.

OK....well I guess no one wants to judge or no ones paying attention, doesn't much matter either way.
They are both ugly but your is bigger so there's room for more ugliness:laughing:
Everybody should have 2 trucks, ones pretty and ones ugly.....
I'll bet my ugly truck is uglier than you ugly truck! I went to the woods this weekend and dug my ugly truck out from under the leaves and debris. It has been sitting there for 9 months waiting for hunting season. Well hunting season is almost over and it's a little disappointed but once again it complied. Took a few minutes but it started right up. This is the beginning of a cycle that has been going on for 16 years. Yea this truck has been in the woods for 16 years and never failed to start when I needed it too.

Where do you park that truck.....at the bottom of the ocean?
I'm going to concede the ugly tractor award, mines too pretty, got a few scratches, a few dents, but not even close. Whats the cab for, those hot summer days? I heard it doesn't get that cold in Alberta.

I keep coming back to this thread for the fine photos. I enjoy them but rarely get good wildlife photos myself.

About the hogs -- the ones that I see regularly (but have never been able to photograph -- they're too fast) are feral hogs and are an extremely destructive species. I see them in the Talladega National Forest when I'm out riding my mountain bike.

Thanks for the pictures.

These were cows,i hardly see moose bulls over here, the hunters wont let them live long enough.

Yes it's nice to see them come around, but they are a danger for the local traffic, them and deer cause many an accident here up north,..often deadly for man and beast.

It's about 300 x 200....feet
Or 100 x 66 meters.
The depth varies greatly from 14' to almost nothing a few years back.
The squarel, is that a white species,..or albino?[/

It's not an Albino and it's not a specific species.
It's a "genetic color variation". This gene will remain recessive in most squirrells that have it. In other words, the offspring of this squirell will most likely have a normal color patterm, white under, and grey-brown on top, and tail. But it will occur again at some time in future generations.
There are some areas where this gene has become dominant and all or most of the squirells are white or a white and brown non typical pattern. It's speculated that in these areas the white is favorable, as it relates to survivability. Perhaps predators are less likely to see it, for some reason. I don't think that's the case here.
I concluded that it's not Abino because the eyes are black, and an albino has red or blue eyes.

Not if you put them in the freezer.

Freezing the deer provides a much safer environment for them.
Eating the deer greatly reduces the risk of lyme disease.

Your obviously referring to Lyme Disease.
You should know that Deer cannot infect you with this bacterium.
The disease is spread by tics and it's not something that you can't easily avoid.
You should be mildly concerned with tics and only if they attach themselves to you, and then only if they do so and remain undetected for over 24 hours.
Do not fear the deer.
If your going to put one in the freezer...Remember It's a lot easier if you cut them up first.
Contact me for recipies should you need them :licking:

Yes your right I was refering to lyme disease. I know that you can't get the disease from the deer but its the deer that carry the ticks. Unfortunately the deer can not be shot too many houses as well as a school. I live in a city of 43K. My lot is almost 2 acres, but the average lot size here is 10,000 to 12,000 sq. ft.

It's a puff adder, referred to as an "Eastern Hognose". It's harmless to humans as it eats only frogs and toads. Kind of amusing as it flattens it's head out and puffs like a boar hog when threatened, if you don't leave it alone it rolls on it's back and plays dead until you loose interest and leave.

Snakes and gators can live on for all i care, but it sure is nice not to have to worry where one puts it's foot out in the bush or stand in a lake or river when fishing.

For some reason I can't help myself when it comes to snakes can't stand them?? My father went he was living a snake didn't bother him at all but that is something I didn't get from him. My summer home is in the northern NY Adirondack mountains and we only have the black bears. There is a lot of smaller wildlife but if you keep your distance they won't bother you and as far as the bears go if they see you first you won't see them. Unless they have a cub I am told. I have been told that even a deer will attack you if things are just right. I have been told by the locals that there is timber rattle snake in the Adirondacks but I have never seen one. We are starting to get a few moose coming down from Canada also.

Alligators have a really hard time turning and they have virtually no reverse. They only know how to charge forward in an emergency, not back up and assess the situation.
Knowing this, and and the fact that their first line of defense is retreat to water, leads me to take what you see as a risk. Having dealt with alligators many times, and having a good understanding of how they think and what their limitations are.... it's not a gamble to me.
Your assertions are unfounded, you, living in Massachusetts have no knowledge of such things, your more concerned with gay rights, civil unions, afraid of guns, and hope like hell someone else will defend your life and property should the time come.

That white you see is sand, just like beach sand. The swamp is probably an old sink. Although you probably couldn't farm it or use it as pasture, it holds a lot of game. From a deer or hogs perspective there's a lot of food there.
