Check out this guy. When I saw him I thought I'd found the missing link. I had never seen anything like this before and I've been looking around for over 47 years. I have never seen one again and this was taken on my property. This is one huge caterpillar. I would not touch it as I've been debilitated by caterpillars before, nothing to mess with. This one looks pretty fierce to me.

Turns out it's not an uncommon moth. It's called a "Hickory horned devil". It's actually the larvae for a "Regal Moth" or the "Royal Walnut Moth". I found it in a wax myrtle a couple of years ago. It's completely harmless.
