1994 Sterling Cyclone with Tecumseh Vantage 35

For the past, well, year almost - I have been without a petrol (gas) mower. I did briefly own an Atco Commodore, but it's best we don't go there!! Anyway, last week I picked up a Sterling Cyclone (probably unknown here in the UK let alone USA and Canada!) push mower with the Tecumseh Vantage...

How shall you be preparing your mower for winter?

Will you use the good old fashioned method of keeping the oil and fuel in the mower and firing it up once a week during the winter months, or will you drain the fuel and change the oil then let it lie until the Spring? I shall be doing the latter mainly because my shed is cluttered as it is...

There we go for another year...

Today I've mowed the front and back lawns for the last time this year. I last mowed them about 2 weeks ago and for the last 6-7 days they haven't grown at all so that's the season over. Last year I kept on mowing 'till mid November so that just shows how cold it is this October. Just need to...

Change oil before or after winter ?

I recently read a Haynes manual that says to change the oil in a mower before storage, but some people say to do it at the start of the season. Which one would you recommend ?

How did your mower do post-storage ?

Yesterday I decided I'd start the mowing season early this year, as it has been unseasonably warm, and got the 2011 Mountfield SP414 2.6HP 100CC Walk Behind out of the shed, where it has been since late October '11. I filled it with fuel, cleaned off the grass from the deck, checked the oil...

    Would this be advisable ?

When I put my mower away for winter storage back in September 2011, I forgot to put any oil in the cylinder via the spark plug hole, so to avoid it "dry starting" when I fire it up later this year, would you recommend spraying some WD-40 into the cylinder and pulling the cord a few times prior...

    Lawn Mower Hours

Well, here is a poll which I think will be interesting! I won't make this into a real poll using the boxes, because obviously the hours vary a lot. Basically, in a reply to this thread, say whether you have a Lawn Tractor, Walk Behind, Commercial, Residential, Diesel or Gasoline mower, and...

Recently a few things have been going wrong with LMF it seems. Examples: On the homepage it says the most recent post in the Front Porch is "Is your mowing season over now ?", but when I click on the FP and look at the list, it says the most recent post is "Beach vacation pics for anyone...

    Mower Winter Storage

Do you keep your mower filled with fuel over winter and start it up every now and then to keep it going, or run it out of fuel and leave it sitting ? EDIT - Oh spark plug! I clicked post without adding a poll... Could Muhammad or Briana please delete this thread and I'll create another one...

    Do they work ?

I'm talking about those bottles you can buy that have a powdery substance in them, and they say they melt snow and ice... I always shovel up the snow from our paths in winter, but can never get all the ice up, so should I buy some of this for the ice ?

    What to use ?

I'll be doing the final mow of the year soon and will be putting the 2011 Mountfield SP414 in for winter storage. I know to run it out of fuel, and make sure it is clean etc... But, I've heard I should remove the spark plug and spray oil into the cylinder. Should I use WD40 ?

Lets say your Lawn Mower broke down, and it would cost $200 to fix - But, there was a mower with the same specifications as your current one for sale for $200 brand new... What would you go for ? Fix your current Mower, or buy a new one and dump the other ? I would fix my current mower, as...

    Hesitant Warm Starts...

My 2011 Mountfield SP414 100CC 2.6 Horse Power Self Propelled lawn mower struggles to start when warm. Let me explain: When I take it out of the shed, I simply give it three pushes of the priming bulb, pull the starter cord, and she fires right up on the very first pull - Great. But, after...

    Safe To Use ?

I have a bottle of fuel additive in my shed, that says it improves performance, cleans carburetors, and increases fuel economy. Would it be safe to add a tiny drop of that into the fuel whenever I fill it up to keep the carburetor clean ? Or would it react badly in the lawn mower engine ...

    Adding Throttle...

How would I go about doing it on a 100CC push mower engine ? I can buy a throttle kit (cable and lever) for under $20 from eBay, but how hard it is to fit to a fixed throttle engine ? It is just the matter of taking off a pin or something that holds the throttle wide open and fitting the cable...

    Warm up time

My mower doesn't state in the manual how long to warm the engine up for... In fact it doesn't even say to warm it up! But obviously, me being me, I do. I usually let it warm up for about 1 minute, but should I warm it up for longer ? It is a self-propel mower, so I don't want to engage the...

    Do carburetors need servicing ?

I was thinking, as long as you don't let the mower sit stagnant for more than a month, the fuel shouldn't clog up the carburetor, so surely that would mean you will never have to service it ? Or regardless of the state of the fuel going through it, will it need servicing at some point in its...

Walk behind Are lawn mowers ever lasting ?

If the oil is changed regularly, can a lawn mower last forever ? My friend in Canada has a 1992 Tecumseh 3.5HP Push Walk Behind mower that has about 10,000 hours on it (probably more), has never been rebuilt, and is still running fantastically. I know engines were made better back then, so...

What is best for my beloved lawn ?

To leave it until it gets quite long and give it a good cut, or to give it frequent cuts when it is only a little too long ? I'd think the frequent cuts would be best, as cutting a lawn when the grass is quite long would cause some "tugging" wouldn't it ? Thanks in advance!

    Confusing manual instructions...

The manual for my push mower says not to tip it on its right side, as that is where the air filter is and it will flood it, and "damage the engine". That is fine, however the oil filler is also on the right side, and when I change the oil tomorrow, I can't help thinking I'll have to tip it on...

    It'll be fine yeah ?

As you probably know, I've been using 10W40 oil in my Mountfield 100cc mower since I bought it. I've only used it for 4 hours with the 10W40 though. I know I shouldn't have used the 10W40, but I did, who knows why! Anyway, I bought some Mountfield SAE30 (Straight-30) from the garden store...

Engine What kind of oil ?

I've just sold something and came into a bit of money, so decided to buy the proper 10W30 oil my mower asks for, as I'm currently using 10W40. Anyway, does it have to be lawn mower oil, or will regular 10W30 car oil work fine ?

This morning the sun was shining, the grass needed mowed, and I had the brand new Mountfield SP414 in the shed that I'd never even started up yet... So, I got the mower out the shed, filled the tank up with fresh unleaded, and filled the engine up to just under the MAX mark with 10W40 oil...

    Quick SP Question...

I've never owned a Self Propelled mower before, so this is why I need to ask this question as I've just bought one. I know the wheels are propelled via a belt, which wears out, as all belts do. But my question is: How many years/hours use can I get out of the belt before it needs changed ?

    Guess what I've just bought!?

A new mower! And not just any crappy store brand mower (like last time... And that ended in a bent flywheel!), a... Mountfield! And not just any Mountfield, the SP414 model, yep, that's SP as in Self Propelled! As with most lower end Mountfield mowers it has a Mountfield engine...
