use some flammable carb cleaner, Berryman's B12, or propane around the intake manifold first to look for vacuum leaks.

disconnect the fuel hose from the carb and see how fast fuel flows into a metal or glass container.

Hi Bertrrr, I do realize that and have been very careful to do it right with the install. Even replaced the diaphram, just doesn't make sense!

Water works too looking for vacuum leaks. No need to "pay" for any caustic chemicals to look for leaks. Little pump spay bottle and start pumping.

Here's another one. Stop buying brake cleaner. Use foaming glass cleaner. About half the price per can over brake cleaner. Compare the skull and cross bones label for each. Use a parts cleaning brush with glass cleaner and clean with authority. No streaks either gotta love it.

Thank you Skippydiesel, the jet is clear, tried 6 settings from go to nearly falling out!
I have to put my thumb over the intake to seal it before it'll start then it runs like crazy! BUT Remove the thumb and it dies! It is the strangest fault I've ever come across!I guess I'll have to get a new set of gaskets and some sealant

A very common problem on these with age is a worn throttle shaft and carburetor housing or a mounting gasket to the head is sucking air.

The dust and dirt kicked up by a tiller is usually much more than a typical mower unless you till in the early morning when the dew is still present.

I've found replacement engine from power washers as replacements. $25-50 area and do not buy if engine is not running. (unless you want to buy a pig in a poke) When pump goes out they usually leave it setting for long time and the carb is then bad.

Honda engines are a good replacement. (and their carbs are usually priced reasonable and or easy to clean)

Watch for engine runs but won't spray water.

AND that type rig (carb and tank) will sometimes run good with 3/4 to full tank of fuel, but start acting up when the level gets below 1/2 tank. Why, the fuel pump is weak and/or the upper reserve bowl has leakage.
