Toro 22" self propelled pinion gear on axle seized!!

Here is something I suspect going here too. The groove for the retaining ring has flared. Push the gear back on and file the ridge off the shaft at the retaining area. This flaring is like knurling by increasing the shaft diameter thus binding even tighter as you attempt to pull past it. Due to close tolerances already present this is like beating to shaft end, flaring the shaft. Imagine that you trying to pull something off a taper shaft the wrong direction, just not possible. It doesn't take a whole lot to cause problems.
This. Beat me too it. Likely someone hit the end and flared it, that or as StarTech posted - the snap ring wore and flared the groove. The easiest fix is to push it back on and file. That said, if it has been pounded outwards and then pounded back in, the transmission could get damaged. The shaft will transmit any force to the transmission. Using a bearing splitter and gear puller will work to. No more pounding - use gentle taps.

Any progress on this? I know it’s been several months. Judging by your photos you’ve already made some progress moving the pinion off the shaft. I’d say you need to start working that pinion back and forth with your lube to get it off. Regarding the puller, use a small 6mm/+- socket as the pusher between the shaft and the tool. Regarding the washer, it should be a simple thrust washer you could substitute with any similar sized washer.
I hope this helps.
