swapping oil filter

Have a Hustler mower with Honda engine. The Honda brand oil filter is 15 bucks. Have cross referenced Honda filter and have come up with several at much cheaper price. My question is if I use a different filter will I toast the motor? thanks n advance

If your engine is still on warranty, I would use Honda filters. How often do you change the oil filter? $15 verses $5 may be cheap insurance.
I have seen where a so called reliable aftermarket oil filter supplier changed manufacturers of the filters and they were bad. This caused a ripple effect for both dealers and owners alike. The supplier of the bad oil filters only supplied more bad oil filters until they finally did something about it. The dealers and machine owners paid for the engine repairs and/or replacements.
I buy Briggs filters for my Briggs engines and Kawasaki filters for my Hustler, which happens to be still on warranty.
All oil filter manufacturers provide cross reference lists, but also have a disclaimer.

I'm confused, probably due to old age. You paid extra to get a quality engine on your unit, now you want to put a cheaper filter on it, hoping that the manufacturers claim "it will fit your engine" is not just a selling point. Does it have the same size filtering material and a bypass valve? Fits your engine and identical to OEM are not the same.
 
thanks for feedback, my machine is way out of warranty. I did buy this mower with the thought of the quality of motor in mind. In my mind buying a quality after market part instead of original is smart money. I went with a Wix filter, the Wix was half the cost of the Honda. again thanks for feedback

Wiz is what I use.

You are not going to a cheaper made filter just cheaper in price.
 
Professionals have the vast experience and should be heeded. I , however, experiment . On my lowend Intek I buy any filter that fits . Heat has done far more damage to my engine than filter. I will comment on Fram. They have gone downhill in my opinion. During the past year I have tried twice to put a Fram on my Nissan per their callout. The lead thread on the female will not engage. They just keep producing a defective filter in this case. I think they make these filters in Israel.

The thing. With Fram on a small air cooled engine Is they restrict the flow of oil to much.
 
The last oil filters i've bought for the autos , one under warranty, one not, were Champion at Farmer's Co-Op for $3.87 + tax and stories galore until I had to pull my britches legs up because of deep BS. Will be checking on lawn tractor fit / compatibility next.

Now looking for less expensive air filters than JD dealer. I don't mind a profit but 3-4 hundred percent, possibly more. I don't think so.

Not that it matters to me but I have used Fram filters on and off through the years and never had a problem with them. I use Baldwin filters now only because my son-in law sells them. Now back in my early years when I was just starting in repairs oil filters were a add on accessory on car and trucks, never seen one on a small engine.
