The easiest way to install a spring is to loop a piece of rope or nylon cord on one end of the spring and pull it over the stud.

With any machine or vehicle, you have, it is a must to know your component arrangement and product label information. Present this information with your help request. This avoids wild guesses or long threads with back and forth guessing.
I have been an automotive and small engine technician for nearly 50 years now and the machine information is always the first thing to know.
All mowers, ATVs and motorcycles have separate engine and chassis product IDs. Most Automotive go by just the VIN number, but the actual build date posted on the driver door/opening is important as well.

StarTech, I understand, but haven't found a hole or slot it fits well in. As I've said, I will try the hole I did find, when I get the belt.
AutoDoc, I gave the mower model, and hope to have the official motor info today. It is located an hour away from me, but we hope to get the info from someone on site.

Man, I'd already left, missed that. My brother can take pics. We'll see what happens. The engine to clutch belt is so tight, the idler pulley is useless, even if I knew where to put it. It also seems to be wrong. It's a tapered pulley, but installed as the docs show, the pulley will push in on the outside of the belt, or the widest part. All the other idler pulleys work this way, pressing in on the belt. If I put the pulley on the inside of the belt, it hits the engine pulley, so that's not it.
I looked at the hole/bolt near the center of the deck, and it seems about right, and I will try installing the pulley when I get one that fits.
Ok, found the part listed. Will try and get that and see. I pulled the other idler(for drive belt) while I was in there, for a better look around. There's a hole more toward the rear of the mower that looks promising.
