Hello all. I have this Snapper push mower with the ex 550 Briggs and Stratton engine. It has the plastic carburetor. It revs way too high and sounds like it is going to blow up. I tried to adjust the governor spring tab already and it fixed nothing. The linkages all looked connected properly and there was no debris around the engine anywhere. What do you guys think, is it internal damage?
 
Would you provide us with the engine model, type and code numbers so we can identify what engine you have. That way we don’t have to guess what carb you are dealing with. We hate making assumptions. They will be stamped on the engine shroud or block.
 
Hopefully this is not where you normally keep a spark plug.

This one is hard to get to governor controls since you have remove the shroud. It may simply be that the static governor adjustment is not set or binding in the linkage; otherwise, it is a governor failure.
 
Off hand not sure if you have an internal governor or a flywheel governor as you have stated only the Briggs seris number. The number is either stamped on the sheet metal or on the crankcase. That said I shall continue.

Internal governor. Is it adjusted properly? Is the correct spring used?
Does the arm on the governor attempt to pull the carburetor closed? It should pull the throttle closed. This could be adjustment or internal damage. Does the linkage between the governor arm and carburetor move freely with no hang ups? If not correct the problem. Check for any bent mounting brackets or foreign matter caught in the linkage, governor arm, or carburetor lever. Be sure carburetor lever moves from wide open to idle.
Check the throttle plate inside carburetor is in place and not missing.

Flywheel governor. Most of the same as above. Also remove air shroud and be sure there is no rodent nest blocking the governor arm movement and if the automatic choke is not affecting the governor arm.
 
LOL, I know the spark plug is not supposed to be there. I feel as if it may be internal damage because it was ran over a lot of sticks as I was told. There are literally chunks missing out of the blade. It seems when I start it to open the carburetor slightly from the position in the picture, would that be normal? I took the shroud off and it was clean under there.
