Need help finding model number of my 11hp Briggs & Stratton - PowerMate Generator (1992)

So I bought this PowerMate PM054-5000 in 1992 right after hurricane Andrew, and it has been turned on, maybe once a decade since...LOL

Thankfully didn't need it for hurricane Ian this week, but took it out today and got it started. The recoil plate had to be removed, I found that the clutch thing in front of the engine wasn't deploying their teeth/vanes to spin the crank. Used a drill and very large socket to spin it. After a few seconds it started catching and put the recoil plate back on and within a few pulls got it started again....so that's good.

BUT I need to know what model/type/serial number this 11hp B&S engine is and for the life of me I can't find the numbers, can someone direct me where the number is?

It looks like I bought a new float gasket in 2017 which has a part number (692215 Carb Body Gasket)
I would like to have the model/type handy incase I need to buy new carb parts, thought there really isn't much left other than the float needle. and maybe ignitor.

Code number would definitely be different if you are sure it is a 1992 model. If that is the original shroud the engine numbers should be located next to the IC decal.

When I get home today and look again on the crank shroud ( where the pull rope is ) for the number. I didn’t see it before, but my eyes are bad.

Take some photos with your camera then enlarge them on screen

ugh...took off the pull rope cover and there are NO numbers there. Looked around the spark plug...nothing. There is a plate under the fuel tank that has a pointer, which goes over the pull rope cover (why there is a pointer? no clue) which would be a PERFECT place to stamp some numbers, but alas nothing.

I tried looking up parts based on Rivets' posting, but not getting a hit as a valid number.

I was able to find a parts diagram using your model number as 254422...and it does look mine....but there are several variants. Can you tell me where you found that number on the motor?.

On the older Briggs engines the model, type and code numbers are stamped into the engine shroud, sheet metal cover which surrounds the engine and has the recoil mounted on it. Most of the IC engines had it stamped next to the decal. You should also look at the flat surfaces of the shroud. Remove it and tip it around in a bright light, it should be there, on one of the flat surfaces.

lordy I was going nuts.... FOUND IT....it WAS on the recoil shroud, but very faint

I ended up painting the embossed numbers and wiping away the excess paint to see better

Glad to hear you found it. Now you should be able to get any parts you need. Just so happens I’ve got a service call on a very similar model, 1988, tomorrow for my niece. 200 mile round trip, but guessthats what you do for your goddaughter. Just hope I’ll have everything i need in the truck, at my age I tend to forget things.

Do you have a suggestion or video link on removing the brass float seat?

I saw a video where the guy tapped a 1/4-20 threads and used collet deep enough, a 1/4-20 bolt and a nut. Sucked the seat out pretty easily. BUT is THAT the way you are supposed to do it?

The replacement, I imagine, is just driving it in until the top of seat is flush with the bore.


How about spring replacement on recoil mechanism. I did once a few years ago after I found the spring had broken, and remember it was a huge PITA. I got it back together and there is JUST enough tension where I can start it and rope goes back in, but would like a little more tension.
