I almost never wash my mowers/decks. I use high pressure air to remove chaff (wet & dry).
Why?
Simple, wet vegetative matter starts to ferment/break down almost as soon as it has been cut. In this process it develops a highly corrosive liquid. The liquid will vigorously attack/corrode all metals.
My rules ;
- Avoid cutting grass when wet
- Using high pressure air (from a compressor) blow clean after every use.
- Pay special attention to deck areas (top & bottom) known to collect chaff & dust.
- Pay special attention to engine cooling - I usually blow down this area with the engine in fast idle.
NOTE: To do this job well, garden blowers do not deliver enough pressure, do not have the nice narrow blast of an air gun that will let you get into tight areas (especially engine cooling system)
