Engine runs good until it kills battery completely. Changed voltage regulator. Checked stator. Ohms good. Checked votage output coming out of stator (engine running) 27volts. Voltage out of the regulator is 14v. Voltage at battery(engine stopped) 12v....engine running 14v....but not charging battery??? Changed battey....Same issue. If i disconnect the battery the engine dies. I can't figure what to do next....appreciate any suggestions...Thanks in advance.

I don't see a problem with your voltages, 27 VAC on stator and 14VDC on regulator are both normal. Your battery should have 12+V when not running. You said kills battery completely, if so what voltage do you measure?

Yes sir, puzzling.I'm usually pretty good with this stuff. Engine dies when the battery is disconnected....I'm thinking the coils create spark to keep it running. I 'm guessing it is running off the battery. that's why it is dieing eventually. The voltage on the battery drops down to about 8v...not completely dead...not enough to run..This engine is on my PRO-drive boat motor....I can tell by the sound of the engine....it starts to miss....pop...then dead...always thought voltage regulator, stator would keep it going because I am getting 14v with engine running at the battery, nothing else connected to battery either..just the engines starter and it is functioning properly...all that seems fine...I know the engine design has 3 different styles of coils availible...Not to keen on there electrical operation...seems like they should operate without a battery????? any knowlege of coils??? Thanks

My kohler on my cub will shut off if I unhook the battery. I found that odd but it keeps the battery charged.

So do you still get 14+V charging until it starts acting up?

yes sir. also thought it was the key switch but ruled that out drawing down running?????

Most likely it isn't killing the spark, it is killing the fuel solenoid on the carb, unless you have the spark advance modules, which require 12v to operate. Kohler voltage regulators require 12v to open the internal switch to charge the battery. No 12v to regulator, no output to anything else. I would say something between the battery, regualtor, stator is cutting out when it gets hot. Could be faulty regulator cutting out when warm, You will need to check voltage at the battery after running for awhile.

Just went back and reread OP I bet the charging system operate through the keyswitch, So problem may be between battery, through keyswitch, and regulator.

Thanks for the reply; I have the needle removed from the fuel selonoid.. not needed..so it is not killing... I think we are on to something with 12v needed at the regualtor... might be getting an open circuit after heating ...something I did not immediately check on stator..... I never checked after long run period(usually when i'm having problem) kinda figured coils might need voltage to run but wasn't sure....so if the charging system isn't working, they will run the batery down until it is to weak to run.....spark advance coils...I have a book but couldn't figure out which coils i have and what was needed for them to operate......good information.....thanks again...rechecking stator hot and regulator hot......also may just change key switch or ohm in run position......new hope Thanks again:smile:

Did you ever solve this problem? The same thing happened to me today after replacing the battery last week.
