Need some advice on this free Honda mower I inherited. Serial Number M2CG-6703446. I like it's light weight, even though it has a steel deck. Engine runs well, except some idle surging, which I hope to clean out with Seafoam.

I have two issues:

First, I have no backwards movement ability unless I pick up the back wheels. When I roll forward, I hear the pins clicking, yet I can't pull backwards at any time, whether running or not.

Second, this three speed has no drive. The belt is on both pulleys, and the trans pulley does rotate with the belt. Cable adjustment does not help, although when I pull the clutch handle, I do have transmission toggle switch movement.

So, two questions: Any suggestions on the backward movement issue?

And, the transmission....is it toast?

Binding while trying to roll backwards could be debris/rust/junk in the drive ratchets. Should tear down each wheel assembly, clean, inspect, replace worn-missing parts. Pay close attention to the pinion gear, key and grease it when reassembling:

No drive? Belt engaged, turning input pulley to the trans, and cable adjusted to confirm arm on transmission is moving? Then yeah, trans is probably gone. No service parts for it, you just replace as a unit. Part Number is 2001-VG4-HO2, list price is $109.97.

Thanks very much Robert. It's probably just easier and more cost efficient to make this into a push mower and use it for trimming purposes.

My Honda transmission gearbox has leaked some fluid. It can be opened since fasteners are Torx screw. It still works, but it getting harder to pull the mower backward. What type of oil/grease should I use to lube it again?
Also, what is recommended type grease for wheels bushings?
