wish there was a market for sweet gum balls

just what are sweet gum balls, candy?

It's a seed pod from a sweet gum tree, a tree we have in the south. The seed pod looks like a porcupine egg:laughing:

Hitting a sweet gum ball is like hitting a small rock. When they first fall from the tree.
I hate the damn things. Them and magnolia trees

It's annoying when you brush up against a branch and get like 10 of them on your pants! :frown:

Does anyone know of a mechanical means of picking up those walnuts?

A little late to the thread, but i hate walnuts they end up getting stuck in the billy goats. I've found the best way to pick them up is a high school kid a rake a bucket, gloves and about $8 an hour on my crew.

Depends on how bad he smells from the walnuts. Just kidding he rides in the truck, he even gets a company shirt, hoodie, hat, bennie cap and i buy his gloves. I like them to look good while they're doing the dirty work.

We have about a dozen huge black walnut trees, some are about 50-60 years old. Many of them began dropping their nuts about a week ago, I have never known them to begin shedding walnuts this early in the year. Thankfully there are not a lot of them to pick up this season, at times in the past there were so many it was practically walnut-to-walnut carpeting in my front yard....

Yeah, what a stupid joke....

I have 6 very tall black walnut trees and I just cut 4 of them down. The balls are a pain in the u know what and those start to fall around july slowly and leave are already down in PA. I am going to cut 1 more tree but keep the other because of the shade. Those trees are such a pain because i have to clean up the balls before I cut my yard so I do not destroy my blades. I am so glad they are gone.

the best use for sweet gum balls is to clean a mower deck.....wet grass wont stay under there if you run over a bunch of sweet gum balls
