I began suspecting a valve issue, I pulled the cover off last night, both valves have .005" of clearance, and travel the same distance closer to open.

Hi Scrubcadet 10,

That is the one I'm referring to. Also be aware that the tiny O-rings need a little bit of light lube, so they slip into place without getting nicked.

Here is a sample video from Teryl Fixes all. Go to the 2:30 minute mark.

Here is another from James Condon:

Well I worked with my micro drill bit some this evening. Going up one size at a time, I went up three sizes without any change whatsoever. I stopped there.
Here is another video of one issue it has, sometimes the governor will hang wide open, this is when it will chug black smoke and smell rich. The governor will not return to surging until I manually move the governor link or I open the choke slowly then it continues surging. I verified that it is not physically hanging on anything outside of the engine when it does this.

I will probably do what star tech mentioned and check the flywheel key.

Is the thin spring wire anti-surge spring connected on the linkage at of the carburetor? It appears to be just flopping around or broken in the video from what I could tell.

It's been connected the whole time, i accidentally knocked it out, didn't put it back.

Well I'm about ready to throw in the towel on this one. I was able to track down a Huayi carburetor which is the OE carburetor for this generator. Put it on and it runs slightly better it will now run smooth with about 3/4 choked. But only if the black idol stopper screw is touching the throttle above 50% throttle, otherwise it surges, AND if I hold the governor at low speed with no choke it dies like it's starving for fuel still. And the governor will still hang up at wide open and run rich like before ...I'm not sure what's going on and at this point I'm spending more time than it's worth. I would like to fix it so I can figure out what's wrong and learn but my sanity is also worth something to.
So seems like it's still lean on idle circuit...I may try to open the jet on this carburetor and see what happens since there is slight improvement.....

Hello Scrubcadet10,

Being a generator, it does not have a low base idle like a mower engine. At the very lowest, I have seen them at 3400 RPM. The actual target speed for most generators is 3600 RPM which should show 60-61Hz at approximately 120 Volts.

I use a Kill A Watt P4400 to read the generator output.

What device on this generator controls the idle setting?

The governor lever arm has a tension spring with multiple holes for setting the no load 3600 RPM setting.

The only generators I have seen that have a low idle control are more expensive Generac models with an electronic idle stepper motor
