Briggs & Stratton 31C707 won’t start after flywheel magnet failure

Q. to assist the OP, I looked on Ebay last night and again this morning but could not find one that matched his exactly. When I looked at sold items, there were quite a few, and the all matched perfectly on both sides. On those the sellers also input the 698281 part number. Did anyone find an exact match that is posted up there now? There are some that look close but both sides do not match.

It was posted in Endicott NY 5 months ago along with many other mower parts. Probably worth at least contacting the seller to see if they still have it.

I see his flywheel on eBay now. It matches via the Model and date code.
It has 12 magnets on the inside.
The keyway matches to the current broken flywheel.
The seller did not put the Briggs part number in the description but there are lots of photos.

I saw that one and a couple like it but the top is completely different than 698281. All the sold ones labeled 698281 have the same top as his. I am concerned that it may be for a different engine.
 
So I believe I have essentially the same engine but let me be more specific the same flywheel on an older machine I could pull the flywheel turn it upside down and see how all these elements or components line up with one another if you're interested let me know but your engine looks identical from the photographs I know the serial numbers are all different but I'm just saying I could check it out if you want.

I might be posting this twice but I posted something on the first page I don't use forums that often but, But I said I believe I have the same engine + as far as I'm concerned my engine is junk it's sitting in the yard I could pull the flywheel and I could turn it upside down and show you how everything lines up, if you are interested let me know but the problem with that machine was the cylinder itself it had nothing to do with flywheel so the flywheel is 100% intact.

The problem started when the flywheel magnets came loose and struck the stator while I was cranking the engine with the starter motor, causing the engine to lock up.


Since then I have:


  • Installed a new flywheel.
  • Installed a new stator (alternator).
  • Installed a new flywheel key.
  • Verified strong blue spark.
  • Confirmed the spark plug gets wet with fuel after cranking.
  • Confirmed the engine has compression.
  • Verified the valves are moving normally.
  • Found an air leak at the crankcase breather cover because the cover was warped. I flattened the cover on glass, cleaned both mating surfaces thoroughly, and resealed it with Permatex Black RTV. I’m currently waiting for the sealant to cure before testing again.

The engine still cranks but will not fire or even attempt to start.


My question is: Could something inside the engine have been damaged when the flywheel magnets came loose and the engine locked up during cranking? What would you check next?
