That is probably a vapor recovery port for charcoal canisters.

The canisters are designed to only vent vapors during start ups then close off the port while running and not open again until the next start up. And the canisters captures the fuel vapor from the fuel tank while the engine is not running as the tank tries to pressurize. A very similar is used on vehicles.

You probably seen the carburetor version and not the intake version.

And something I notice about the #30 Image. It showing a metal version.

On the BriggsStrattonStore.com they have first the metal version and then a plastic version shown. They are idiots at the BriggsStrattonStore, having to email Briggs Direct for an answer. If it is the plastic you can sub a 595606 which around $40 less than the 797503. The 595606 is the ready start version and main difference I saw when I sub it for a 695241 due to cost was the ready start version has a stud for the air vane spring. According to my records that was back in '22 but Briggs has superseded it to the 595606 now.

Reply back from Briggs says the 797503 is definitely Aluminum not plastic.

And this just shows how lazy our vendors have become. They want us to do all their work for them. If I going to the work of researching an item I will probably find a vendor with lower prices just like I on a Stens .375LP 0.050 100 ft of saw chain. I actually found and brought a roll for half the Stens price. Now they only provided me with an up to date price file I may had look for chain specs and sources otherwise. They think not providing the info keeps me buying from them, Bologna. I not going thru multiple pages on their site to find what I want. That's what search engines are for.
