No, that might not be the end all....of problems you may have. We can only go by what you say and how you say it....in reality, one persons left, is another persons right...so to speak, so kinda hard to say 100% on anything we don't have our hands on.

MTD mowers are OEM belt specific because of the special width and cut angle. That may be part of the issue but maybe not be all of it. What I see with using non OEM or OEM style belts on MTD or JD in some cases is they will slip and not grip the pulleys correctly I don't know if your belt issue is from slippage and overheating of the belt, or if there is another mechanic issue damaging the belt.
