    Hot chocolate

One of the things I love about winter is the chance to indulge in hot chocolate every evening. Sometimes I add a dash of orange (in the form of alcohol!). How do you serve yours?

    Wheeled snow shovel

I just came across this non electric snow shovel. I know it would be pretty useless for those with a lot of the white stuff but is it worthwhile for lighter loads?

    Icy lawns

I grew up with warnings about staying of the lawn when it is icy to avoid damaging the grass. As a child I half resented that as my desire to play outside was more important. Now I find myself repeating the cycle from the nagging perspective! Does it really matter though?

    Stand on mowers

Anyone here using a stand on rather than ride on mower? I read somewhere that they are popular with some because they take up less space but I would expect them to be harder to drive.

A request for a new section

I love this forum and find it easy to navigate and full of good people/information which is great. Sometimes though there is something I want to say/ask that is general in nature but still related to mowers and so on. Instead of posting to the Front porch could we have a section for 'all those...

    Snow in the UK!

It's been pretty hard going here for a while with the unusual amount of snow. It seems the whole country grinds to a halt when we get any amount of snow, with transport and schools being badly affected. Things were already pretty crazy for me so this has added to the confusion, hoping for a...

    Ride on seat backs

Looking at the variety of ride on mower styles available I noticed that only a few have a higher backed seat. I would think that more would go this route as the benefits for posture and back support would be a good selling point. Or am I missing something?

    Garden party

I am dealing with the approach of winter by dreaming of a nice party I could hold next year. Has anyone here ever had a garden party? My friend threw one to celebrate her new water feature. (A good excuse, don't you think?) Everyone dressed up and wore hats and so on.

    Lawn furniture

Just wondering what type of furniture you have out on your lawn. I would really like a swing seat but hubby isn't so keen. I suppose he is right in thinking that the unpredictable weather would make it difficult to keep it dry. (I would want something with fabric and padding!)

    Residential market ride-on

I was just reading about the John Deere 100 and x300 series. I didn't realise that cruise control is a standard on these, that sounds like a great option to have. The residential market mowers look great, and I assume they are aimed at those with large lawn areas around their house. Is there any...

    The division of labour

This article is a little old but I believe it still represents the way a lot of people in the UK think. I'm not sure how they found their data but I would have thought these days more couples shared the house and garden chores rather than still thinking of things as men's or women's work. Do you...

    Mamma Mia

After a good day in the garden I treated myself to a nice bath, a glass of wine and one of my favourite DVDs 'Mamma Mia'. I still laugh at the part where Pierce Brosman sings S.O.S. I like that they all sang in the film, but he is so bad he's good! After the first line Meryl Streep is looking at...

    Drastic way to prune roses

A friend was telling me about a rather radical method of pruning roses. Simply take a chainsaw to them! Not randomly like some kind of bad B movie, but in an organised way. Evidently they grow back to be even more magnificent than you could imagine. Hmmm, not sure I could do it. Anyone here tried?

    Too late to seed?

Someone just asked me if it is too late in the year to seed their newly turned over ground which was previously a veggie patch. The weather here is still quite mild but rainy on and off as always! I thought early October would be the cut off point but maybe it's worth a try?

    Tyres for ride-on in ice

We haven't bought our ride-on as yet but I just realised that in the winter we are going to have to ride it on a (private) road which is always icy and on an incline. Are there special tyres you guys use for grip on the ice?

    Oh no he didn't!!

I have just spent a few minutes chuckling over this story. I have no intention of every trying to outrun the law but if I was so inclined i wouldn't choose a ride-on mower as my means of escape! Some people really amaze me.

    Slugs and beer

I was reading about 'green' ways to deal with slugs and inevitably the beer suggestion featured at the top of the search. What I found interesting was that these pests have preferences! It wouldn't do much for their advertising to have '9 out of 10 slugs prefer our brand', would it.

    Using cooking oil as fuel

Here in the UK there are plenty of people trying to be greener by using cooking oil (new or used) in their vehicles. I know it is possible with a diesel rather than petrol engine, question is would you try it with your mower?

Buying a second machine for small areas

While a larger mower is obviously the choice for large areas what do you do for the smaller pieces of grassed land that you can't reach? Is a strimmer good enough?

    Safety features

Just wondering what kind of safety features there are on the lawn tractors out there. If you are buying something that will be around when curious young children are playing nearby what do you look for as standard? Cheers.

What to buy for 5 acres of wilderness?

I have to start thinking seriously about what to buy to deal with our new land acquisition. Basically its around five acres of overgrown weeds right now. I know I will have to deal with that before buying a mower, but I'm pretty sure there is grass underneath it! Is a sit down mower the only...

    Hello from the UK

Hello everyone. I'm not sure this is the right place to post a greeting but I saw a few others here so hopefully I'm okay. I'm British and have a really nice old cottage with around 1/5 acre of garden. Most of it is lawn and we have managed with a Black and Decker walk behind since living here...
