10 acres per week, $5k budget

I'm about to go mow two yards right now. A zero turn couldn't do these yards due to size and slant. Ever notice how the mowing team, the fat guy is on the zero turn and the skinny guy is weed trimming? Maybe they should rotate jobs a bit.

Ran into a real jackass yesterday.

sgkent.... Good idea, wish I had thought of it yesterday. Maybe it would have worked. Doubt it though. The guy suggested I'd "tear up his yard and not pay for it." There isn't much you can do with a personality like that but I'll keep your suggestion in mind, thank you. No doubt this...

slomo, Glad you liked that! Neat video too. In the process of getting my wife a self-propelled mower so she can help me mower easier. We are blessed to have wives that enjoy hard work.

Sounds like you know just what kind of neighbor this guy is! Sorry you have to go through this sort of thing. We each have the option of being a good person. Our attitude and how we treat others can literally change their lives and for the better. Oh I know what you mean but that man had...

That was enjoyable....getting a cast away mower going. First mow tomorrow.

Mower still going strong! Mowed another yard with it yesterday, grass nearly 8 inches tall in places. I did have the deck raised all the way up though. I don't know how much money I've made with this cast away mower, certainly over a grand so far.

Mow with a push mower and lose whatever weight you can. You're welcome. LOL. (I do a lot of mowing with a push mower, have mowed over 3 hours non-stop with one, but that wasn't 10 acres!) OP, what did you end up doing?

Ran into a real jackass yesterday.

Lady's place is really grown up.....REALLY BAD. Tall bushes, vines, trees much too close to her house. She answered my "odd jobs" add in the local trading paper and we came to an agreement on my wife and I removing the brush, trees, etc. and hauling those off to the landfill. I've done jobs...

What tools and books are needed to rebuild a B&S push mower engine?

Would you consider selling that shaft straightener device? I was mowing for a guy the other day and hit a pipe! Old guy had really let his place go and it was hidden in some tall grass. I currently have that mower in the shop for them to try their shaft straightener on it but If I keep up...

Lady gave me a Honda GCV 160.....looks rough....have questions.

I appreciate the suggestion but her neighbor gave it to her and I highly doubt she got anything signed. She's probably already forgotten she ever had it! LOL Ordered new carb-mounting bolts, air filter, and air filter housing cover. Is there a big washer that helps hold the blade on...

Lady gave me a Honda GCV 160.....looks rough....have questions.

OK so this potential mowing client hired me (then forgot she hired me and hired someone else...oh well...how it goes) but she had me take off a Honda GCV 160 that some fool had been running with the air filter off of it. Hopefully I can get it going. Questions. When was it made? Honda GCV...

Mowed four yards with the mower today.....I LOVE THIS MOWER. Lighter than Little Blacky, uses much less gasoline. HOW COULD ANYONE ABANDON SUCH A WONDERFUL LITTLE MOWER?

I'd still straighten the thing. If it cuts off my leg, that's on me. I'll sign any release anyone wants when it comes to that or any other risk I take.

Rich, Thanks man. Frankly I'm a little surprised a lawn mower forum has members that suggest buying a new mower over fixing it. I thought the purpose for a forum was to help others fix stuff. Got the mower for free.....enjoy the challenge. Now that the remnants of Hurricane Ida blew...

Guys, I like to fix things, which is why I am here and not reading reviews on Lowe's.com .......I enjoy the challenge and opportunity to learn something new. *I'm not hurting for a mower, I have a backup I got running last week and my main mower may be fine after a carb cleaning or rebuild. So...

That's not a long drive at all. I used to drive 3 hours, one-way, for literally 60 seconds of fun back when I was skydiving every other weekend. I have driven 19 hours one-way just to ski for two days. (Hopefully will again this coming ski season). Longest trip was 13,000 miles one-way to...

What tools and books are needed to rebuild a B&S push mower engine?

Naturally I am now thinking about a complete rebuild......"Little Murray's" shaft is bent.......rest of her seems fine though. I've done a rebuild before (25 years ago in a night class) and I have re-honed a cylinder......is this something I could do on my own? Replace a bent shaft on a 3.5...

BENT SHAFT: 3.5 horsepower Briggs & Stratton has a bent shaft.

My dad told me of a shop that straightened mower cranks without removing those from the engine. I doubt anyone does that now. The local landfill sells lawn mowers for $5.00. I might start checking there.

BENT SHAFT: 3.5 horsepower Briggs & Stratton has a bent shaft.

I guess that's the end of that! The 20" Murray push mower a mowing client gave me has a bent shaft. I was fearful of that since it had this weird pull of the rope, like it was "catching on something" and the shaft itself (with blade removed) was very wet with oil. The blade itself looked...

Trashed Murray question: short pull on rope.

Figured out the trouble. BENT SHAFT. Had my father turn the flywheel with a 15/16" socket and drill as I looked at the shaft. Pretty obvious it's bent. I was afraid of that but had high hopes. Oh well.....learned what to check first and how to check for it.

I use water and soap also at times........but I always dry or drain and leave to drive in the hot sun. I don't put my tools up wet. A clogged ejection chute will absolutely clog up a mower! My Little Blacky is prone to that.

That was enjoyable....getting a cast away mower going. First mow tomorrow.

Thanks man. I did wash under the deck the next day......good amount of grass washed off but there was still an enormous amount of space between the deck and the blade. It could have trapped much more grass before it became a problem. Excellent mower at an excellent price (price of fresh oil...

Trashed Murray question: short pull on rope.

That's a good question and I don't know if it's long enough...trying to test one variable at a time. I am holding the brake handle down. (I looked at that, the brake does work). Pull without plug in and it pulls much easier and "coughs" (whatever that indicates).

Trashed Murray question: short pull on rope.

Took Bert's advice and pulled without the spark plug in. Much easier to pull now and "coughs." After I get a new spark plug I'll take the pull rope assembly apart later this week (have to build a deck tomorrow).

Are you talking to me? I actually do mow everything (right now) with a push mower. 21" until I can get my 22" (Little Blacky) fixed. Temps have gotten into the 90's this summer with very high humidity. I think Saturday's mow, around 1 PM (2nd and 3rd yards of the day) were "the most humid...

Trashed Murray question: short pull on rope.

So continuing "having fun cleaning up the Murray 20 inch" but hit a snag. I changed the oil and put in a new air filter, new gasoline and some carb cleaner. I give the rope a pull but it doesn't come out very far. The rope seems long enough. It's not "hitting" so I plan to get a new spark...

Did you ever have any luck finding out the value? Have you tried looking at ebay and seeing what anything similar got bid up to? How about calling the local repair shop? Here, in southern WV, guys sell used mowers on the side of the road. I'd ask those guys although their answers may be biased.

Having fun cleaning up a Murray 20 inch.

A mowing client gave me this mower. Older model Murray 20 inch. Today I began the clean up. I think what this lady had was something she'd bought out of a yard sale or off one of those guys we see around here that parks on the side of the road and sells a few old lawn mowers. I'll try and...

Hello, new here, mower problems, cracked diaphragm?

Thanks for the replies and "likes." It was actually yesterday (Saturday) that I was able to get out as the rain continued, even a little into today. THE MOWER IS DA BOMB. It's easier-to-maneuver and is clearly lighter. It cuts like a champ. I was able to mow fairly deep and even wet grass...

I picked up an abandoned mower someone had left in the yard of an abandoned house. The grass was over knee deep and it had been out in the rain for months. It's a Murray 21 inch with B&S 500E engine. I washed it and got it going after removing the dirtiest-air-filter-I'd-ever-seen and...

Hello, new here, mower problems, cracked diaphragm?

I have made arraignments for a local guy to rebuild the carb. Hopefully that will do it. I'll ask him about the "long inlet manifold" and if mine is plastic. Thanks. In meantime I have gotten a Murray going that someone literally abandoned outside. I like free things that make me money...

Oil change on Murray with Briggs and Stratton 500E engine.

Oil change on Murray with Briggs and Stratton 500E engine.

Thank you but that's a design disgrace! I went ahead and dumped the old oil out, managed to do so without one drop spilled. However, how many people ended up with big messes, smashed fingers, etc. having to do it this way??? If I ever do a rebuild on such an engine, I'll put my own drain plug...

Oil change on Murray with Briggs and Stratton 500E engine.

A mowing client gave me this mower, left outside for God knows how long. I got her going after adding some oil and removing the beyond-clogged air filter. I have since replaced the filter with a new one. I want to do an oil change but can't seem to find a drain plug. IS THERE A DRAIN PLUG...

Hello, new here, mower problems, cracked diaphragm?

I did that last summer.....cleaned entire fuel system. Do you still think it could be just dirty? The mower is 20+ years old.....no idea how old it is...but I got it in 2001 or 2002 and was abandoned then.

    Need a new deck, model

Just a thought, have you tried the local landfill? The one here sells lawnmowers for $5.00 per, no matter the condition. You might get lucky. Also, is there a "trade paper" in your area? The one in my area has very good deals pretty often.

Hello, new here, mower problems, cracked diaphragm?

Hi there. Totally new here and first time on a tool forum. I have an MTD Yard Machines push mower (Model #: 11Z-084C062 4 Horsepower) that I call "Little Blacky." Little Blacky is named after the pony of the same name from the movie "True Grit." She was given to me in 2001 or 2002 by a...
