I bought a new 213111 mower this Spring. Almost from day 1, the rear wheel height lever has shown a tendency to slip to another setting during mowing. It looks to me like a design flaw. Different from the front wheel which has a central pin to hold it. I am willing to also consider operator error (me) or incorrect assemblyat the Ace store where I bought it. Anybody ?

I doubt it was your operator error on your part. Height adjusters on those mowers are setup at the factory. Take unit back to Ace, if they are an authorized repair dealer, of a Toro authorized dealer for warranty repair. Hope Ace or you did the warranty paper work so you are covered. AS THIS SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER YOUR WARRANTY, DO NOT TOUCH.

Yeah, you are right. Toro apparently has a BIG PROBLEM. The two closest places for authorized warranty work that Toro gave me, both refuse to do it unless I bought it there. Its now MY PROBLEM.

call toro and tell them what the repair stations told you.

The only things I would check would be to make sure the height adjuster is fully seating on the locking protrusions, and that the axle nut is not really loose.

Have you contacted Ace to see if they will help you out in any way. Worst that can happen is they say no. Sometimes customer service surprises people.

The fact that the two local Toro dealers will not help you because you did not buy mower at their shop is shortsighted and unprofessional. If I did not work on equipment that people bought from me, I would have no business.

Probably just the wheel needs to come off, and the metal adjuster that is flexible and goes in the slots, needs to be bent a bit more to stay in place. Try to fix it yourself.

I did contact Ace and spoke to the manager of my local store. Seemed to want to stay out of it. (Sgt Schultz) I dealt a couple of times with Toro customer service online and in chat. Seems outsourced and they just give me repair possibilities further away and refer me to owners manual. It’s become a bigger issue beyond the simple adjustment or fix of this little problem. I am trying to get some corporate email or telephone numbers to escalate a bit. I will McGyver a work around for now.

I have a couple of Toro’s with the same issue, except mine are from the early 1980’s and didn’t start slipping out of the adjuster notches until they were more than 20 years old. I did what Tiger Small Engine suggested and that worked for a while, but the metal was fatigued after all those years and didn’t keep tension anymore. I ended up drilling a hole and bolting the adjuster in place. I always mow with the blade up high anyway, so no need to seasonally adjust for height. Since your mower is new, I expect that you can just bend the adjuster a little to increase tension and you’ll be good for a long time. But if you continue your campaign with Toro please let us know your progress.
