Briggs and Stratton Intek v-twin 20hp

Hello C.,

One problem that is possible is the ignition coils kill wire because an inline diode is failing. The harness diodes fail with age. Usually, one of the cylinders will lose spark/fire intermittently. Eventually the problem becomes chronic.
How do I replace that diode?

They are made/ soldered into the harness. I think Teryll Fixes all has a video indicating how to replace them. Most of the time I just look up the harness using the engine information and order a new engine coil kill wire harness segment. A V-twin engine will have 2 tiny diodes in the coil kill harness. (1 for each coil)
 
What is the pattern of the backfire? I am leaning towards cleaning the carburetor.
That's what is so odd about this. It's a random backfire. It's now not only during idle but at full throttle, too. At first it was a slight backfire only while idling. Now it's happening no matter where the throttle is positioned.
 
Compression is 140 on each cylinder.
Assuming your compression gauge is accurate AND is MADE FOR SMALL ENGINES........

Amazing it cranks over. Sounds like she is all carboned up inside. That value of 140psi is 9.5:1 compression ratio. Most new Briggs are 8:1'ish. Also sounds like the ACR is not working.
 
I think the "140psi" on both cylinders number is fictitious or the gauge is broken.

Was this cranking psi? The starter does not spin fast enough for that reading even with the throttle wide open.

Thanks for the reply. I can check each cylinder with a scope for carbon. But I don't know about it being new. This is a 2008 engine. Is that considered new? Do you mean engines manufactured before a certain date are higher in compression ratio? I don't mean to sound like I have a bad attitude. I'm really trying to understand.
The compression gauge I used was a Suntune model. It's ancient, I agree. I've had it for years. It's a relic, but it does say in the directions that it can be used on small engines. I made sure I followed the directions to the letter. According to the gauge, both cylinders are equal in compression, and the Briggs and Stratton manual I have says the compression should be between 120 to 155. Being that it's in the middle, I assumed it was a good spot.

It's a brand new gauge. Never been used prior to this. And yes, this was cranking psi. I continued to crank it over until the needle on the gauge stopped moving. Both plugs were removed, so it spun easily.

I'm not questioning you personally, I'm questioning the compression gauge.
