Checking on warped single cylinder heads on Briggs Inteks.

Was working on a Intek single this morning and when running a feeler gauge around the perimeter to check for flatness while on a glass plate, and found the head to be flat, but also when doing further measurements along found that the head was cupped resulting in the area between the cylinder wall and pushrod cavity were the head gasket always blows was depressed 25 thousands.

Put sandpaper down on glass and sand the cylinder head. I usually go for .002” on feeler gauge when running it under head and glass to check.

The area between the cylinder and the pushrod cavity may not be in flatness with the mounting surface is what i was getting at. The area around the bolt mating surface may check flat with a feeler gauge and the area that you cannot reach next to the straight pushrod cavity could be off 25 thousands as I found yesterday while working on a head.
 
Briggs larger single cylinder engines are bad about blowing the head gasket out at the push rod area. I resurface every one of them before reinstalling.

This is why it is so important to clean the air-cooling fins on every rider engine a couple of times per season if doing a lot of mowing.

Most engines are lucky if the engine shroud is removed a couple of times in their lifetime to check for debris on cooling fins. When that happens it is also because there is an issue with engine starting and running.
 
If you are going to shave the head by 0.025 or more than you need to double up on the head gaskets. A little shaving only increase the compression ratio but a lot can have the piston hitting the head.

Now the 796026 is being superseded to 84011649 and expect to be released very late June or early July.

But yes the heads are bad to warp and it is a poor design. They need to re-engineer both the cylinder block, gasket, and head to add a bolt in that area.

The sad truth as I see it is that the manufacturers are pushing the brink of self-destructive designs so they can sell more new products.

A lot of past years have been focused on building reliable brand names that were known to last, now they are just banking-in on the namesakes and building poorly designed equipment.

How many brands are actually made by the company that represents them. So many brands are outsourced to third party manufacturers that are designated to handle parts and warranty, but in reality offer nothing.
