From my calculations we are on the up compaired to the site as a whole. Fewer visitors and our viewing is still strong. The site is about 30% down and we are still going strong.

No I will not add in the site statics. It is not easy to come up with. I have not been able to create an automated way to get the information.

Chuck,

I didn't know about the site statistics, but I felt our thread was doing alright judging by the numbers you provide. I started doing that way back, but figuring it all out was giving me a head ache! . . . LOL

How in hell do you calculate the total number of site visitors?

Twice ???

Oui Mon Ami,

Originally the thread was located on the MTD Forum. Then it was moved to the Transmissions and Transaxles Forum and now we are out on the Front Porch, sitting in our cane rockers, sipping a Pimms Cup.. Enjoy

Rog

PS. Sorry Chuck, I didn't realize that you had answered his question.

C10 Update: Knowledge Learned

All I can say is my head aches now..

Ron, I have nothing but admiration for you, undertaking such a project when it really wasn't something you were already completely familiar with.. That is why I started working on small engines. (Note the word "Small"!). It was not a vocation in my wheel house and I wanted to learn. You, my friend, dove in head first! I like your - 'in for a dime, in for a dollar' attitude.. And wish you all the luck in the world.. I would never had done it.. Needing information was what brought me here in the first place!

I "rebuilt" a few engines when I was a teenager.
To us back then, rebuilding consisted of reaming the cylinder ridges, honing the walls, installing new rings and slapping it back together with new gaskets.
We did my buddy's engine and didn't remove the carbon from the ring grooves on the pistons..........it was so tight that we couldn't
even tow it to start it...the rear wheels would just lock up when we dumped the clutch!

Then I did one more completely about 15 years ago. A '91 Chev police car engine.
I sold that to a neighbor who loved it, but wrecked it on an interstate while he was towing a trailer.

Anyway, this time I'm trying to do it right.
I looked last night and the equivalent GM crate motor would have set me back about $8 grand, tiho
I could spend less,............. and get less.
I (hopefully) will not come close to that number with mine.

There are still many things that confound me.
Having looked at the crate motor specs, there is NO way the quench can be optimum given the motor data and C/R.
So, maybe I am making much ado about nothing??
I HAVE always had the tendency to get caught up in specifications. Comes from my many years in mechanical purchasing.
At least I have left enough meat on the block so that I CAN put thicker head gaskets on to lower the C/R should mine prove to be too difficult.

This IS experience I am gaining, and that is priceless....

Ron, I too commend you for your efforts on your truck, I mentioned you might want to consider a "crate-motor" awhile back, I don't know your age, or financial status, ( I know ya AIN'T rich !! ) In the case of my brothers in law they both in their 70s, we all grew up together, my wifey is their sister ... anyway they have money, NOT millions , but they are comfortable..VERY comfortable, ... anyway when they decided to buy their trucks / cars they got them at the "Turkey Rod Run" at Daytona ( held yearly) but they decided to repower them, hence the crate motors, they decided their time with family and friends was more valuable at this time in their lives, than putzin aroun, chasin down the latest parts & info to build a motor they wanted, Over the years we started with go-karts & mini-bikes, after that, and still is for 1 brother... stockers, .. they are avid fans ( living an hour from Daytona Speedway and 2 hrs from some of the stocker dirt tracks in the area, you would not believe how much of a Hot-Rod heaven this Central fl. area is,.. the closer to Daytona, the more car-shows (every weekend) at several venues ... and street rods runnin aroun,, MOST of these rodders are RETIRED !! anyway... if ya got money, & family when your "OLD" let someone else do the work you did years back ...

Thanks, Boo.
I have looked at crate motors and the closest one to my build would have cost about $8 grand.
And I still think mine will be better.......(I'll have higher C/R and roller rockers...)
I tend to get caught up in the specifications minutia......I want to choose the critical parts myself.
But, I have been temporarily hampered by knowledge I had not gained yet..
I would have selected different pistons maybe, If I had been aware of things like compression height.
I could have had my block decked in the initial round of machining, but would have had to scramble to select
parts that would have been optimum for whatever the resulting dimension would have been.
But, so much of it is trial and error...install the crank and piston/rod, measure, select other parts and/or machining and repeat.
Having done this,I will be dialed in exactly......
With the set of parts and machining I have selected. I will have maximum leeway to alter head gaskets if I
find that my C/R is too high.
But, I'm gonna give it my best shot with adequate cooling and cold air intake.
If I gotta run 93 octane, so be it.

I just want the most I can get out of the parts I have chosen.

Ron I forgot a lot of this schitt, but I do remember, ... there was a site on-line, that you could input the details (specs) of the parts YOU wanted to combine, to make your desired motor, and it would return, the results of whether or not, it would all be compatible, the approx HP ratings, and revised eng. specs., it then gave list of parts & specs for real life built, run & DYNO proven results engines they had run on their dyno, it was some performance testing facility for a racing engine build-shop, you could just tell em .. I want a XXX brand motor, 500 HP (street, drag, circle, etc. ) and this is my expense limit, they could send you ( for a measly sum (I think it was $15.00) a printout of several suggested combinations that would fit ( OR NOT) your criteria, It was a pretty detailed report, I will go through my old, OLD files, and see if I can find something on it, IF you want ... Wish I had thought about this sooner..... Boo

This CELLPHONE compatibility site works on the same principle ..https://willmyphonework.net/

Good morning Gentlemen and I use that term very loosely.

Been off line for a bit and will been most of next week as I am getting bore scoped on Tuesday due to possible precancerous indications on a noninvasive test I took a month or so ago. I figure I would run over all the posts that I can before all that mess. I told the doctor he better buy me dinner and drinks BEFORE he gets that up close and personal with me but he laughed and said I would be paying for HIS dinner that night. I like him, I think we will get along.

Ron, wish you well on the engine, build it up as best you can then blow it (turbo or supercharger), or juice it (NO2) to get the ponies you want out of it.

The rest of y'all play nice and I will catch up with you in a bit. I have a could of mower engines I need to work on as soon as the dang rain stops, the temps warm up a bit and I can get back in my shop.
