Cause I've been mowing the lawn once a week for many years with a gas-powered mower, and am wondering if I can get cancer from its emissions?
Can lawn mowers cause cancer?

Just smoke a couple of packs of cigarettes ever day can be very helpful.

California is "special"!! Everything there causes cancer or everyone there causes cancer depending on who is speaking!!!
Many of us run hundreds of gallons of gasoline thru our mowers every season and some of us have been doing this for many years.
I have a small wood chipper and as I am left handed, I stand to the right side of the chute where the engine exhaust blows out. I attempt to position the machine so the prevailing wind will blow the exhaust away from me, but this doesn't always happen so I just deal with it.
When mowing, I'm more concerned with the dust and whatever the customers have put on their lawns but haven't informed me. I wear goggles, a dust mask and hearing protection. In a normal season, I go thru two dust masks, this season with it being so dry, I'm on my third dust mask and it is still August!!!

I used to wake up in the middle of the night digging the skin on my hands between my fingers because they would itch so bad. Like having poison ivy without the blisters. That stopped when I when to using a ultrasonic carb cleaner. Cause of the itching, Napa carb cleaner in the 5 gallon bucket. As a mechanic we are exposed to gas, oil, naptha, benzene, and a host of other chemicals that have all been found to cause cancer. Some of those chemicals will cause nerve damage just from skin exposure.

Don't let the EPA get ahold of this question. They will add about 5000 dollars for emissions to the cost of a mower.

As an officer of a local cemetery association, I was concerned when an announcement was made in the newspaper to honor the grave of deceased man who was influential in getting the motorcycle helmet law repealed here is CT.
There were three groups of about 500 motorcycles each escorted by the State Police from a gathering area about 10 miles away to the cemetery. I was at the cemetery during one of these gatherings which were held on Memorial Day. With about 500 motorcycles arriving and about the same departing, the odor of unburned gasoline, engine exhaust and noise was overwhelming to the point that I decided to leave. Knowing the area, I positioned my vehicle so I could leave the area easily and not get into the traffic.
Watching this was actually awesome as they shut off their cycles all at the same time and in an orderly manner passed by the grave of the honoree. On signal from their leader, they started up their cycles and departed as the next group arrived from the other direction. In each group there were some cycles that wouldn't restart. After the ceremony, I returned to the cemetery and ended up bringing about 15 or so dead cycles and their owners back to the gathering area in many trips with my cargo trailer where they had maintenance support already staged there.
The 3,000 or so beer bottles that were left is another story, but I won't get into this!!!
I never have been around where there were 1,000 lawn mowers running at the same time however!!!!

The new EPA study recently concluded that living leads to death.
Seriously, the exposure to the emissions is so minimal you have nothing to worry about. Now if you were in an enclosed environment, such as when a Zamboni emits into an enclosed area, then I would be concerned.

That is a sure thing living leads to death. :laughing: I don't care what you are running you will kill yourself if you run it in a enclosed area. Here in the northern climate ever winter someone gets killed when they run a gas powered generator in their garage attached to their house.
