Would this be worth getting fixed?

Sounds like you may have serious internal Damage. If you hear a knocking sound when you try to start it, the engine is likely toast. Powerwash it externally and see if there is a hole in the block, or where it was leaking.
Add some oil before trying.

I think you missed read his post, it’s a Toro 74353, a 10 year old Time Cutter is not close to 10K. My question is why didn’t the low oil sensor kill the engine before this damage occurred? 🤔
 
Do those mowers have a Low Oil Pressure Switch? Put a 'Check Oil First' sticker on the engine..
There should be some electronics that won't allow starting unless you do.. GREAT IDEA
 
I, personally, would see if I could find a repair center that would install a used\rebuilt engine approx. the same size and offer, at least, a 30 day warranty on the engine. Much cheaper than a new engine. I have done this for my customers a few times, when I have an engine to install. Replacement labor is not that hard.

I said "It would appear (Google) that the new replacement cost of a 7453 ,is north of $10,000 US" the important words are "new" & "replacement" as in a new (not same age) machine of similar capacity/design.
As always one of the options is to purchase a new machine - could be larger, the same, smaller - this was an estimate of the same sized new machine.
Second hand (with all its risks) is also an option as is putting a new (or good second hand ) engine. 😈

The Toro TimeCutter 74353 is a 20 year old consumer Z with a stamped deck, sealed transaxles, and a briggs engine known for bending push rods.

Other than simple cheap fixes, I would move on.

The author asked for advice - I think he may naw have a good understanding of the range of options that are available to him :devilish:
 
I am with The Old jFiddler on this one. You indicated that you let it run 5 to ten minutes before it ________. Well, if it stopped with a clunk it may have thrown a rod from lack of ______, or it you engaged to drive the cutting blades it may have shut down from_______ or loss os ____pressure, of maybe you had your headphones or earbuds on all wound up for _______and _______tunes, OR maybe: If you can only fill in two of the blanks all is normal. Hire a mechanic, Hire a lawn service, or hang out on a different forum.
