Won't restart after safety shutdown

1.Typically a 30 minute run then nothing is trash/bugs/grass/leaves in the fuel tank. Waiting say 30 mins and she starts fine as the OP described is it. Flush all tanks out and blow with shop air. Probably not a bad idea to install new fuel line from tank to carb. New filter and shutoff too.

2.Pull the fuel line off AT the carb inlet. Drain into a clear jar. Look for water and poor delivery. Should have a solid stream if the tank is clear.

3.Could be a fuel cap non venting issue. Shot in the dark. Whiling draining leave the cap ON and tight. If you crack the cap and the fuel delivery improves, your cap is not venting.

4.Another long shot is a weak sparky coil getting hot.

5.Last is trash/bugs/leaves in your fuel can. Do you have a wide open spout on your fuel can? Or a new style spout that are basically sealed? If yours is open, every time you fill up you pass garbage to the carb. Make sure your can and tank/s are clean.

Mower will not restart and no fire at the plugs. Let sit for 1/2 hour and fires right up.

If you have no spark, this must be fixed. Sitting 30 mins then spark returns sounds like a weak coil.

Must figure out are you lacking fuel and or spark?

what others wrote but this statement confuses me. " if I shutdown the engine (key off) it does start right back up." Are you saying that if the engine dies because of safety reasons, it won't restart, but if the key is turned off and back on afterwards it will start?

If so that could be a safety logic situation. Imagine someone falls off the seat, engine dies and then as they are falling they grab the seat to pull themselves back up. Engine coughs and continues, cutting and dragging them. Or engine they hit a branch and immediately they hop off, kills the mower, so they stand next to it, one elbow on the seat pushing down with their weight reaching under it to clear the branch by turning the blades just a little. Engine is close to TDC on the compression stroke. One would not want the mower to suddenly start. Turning the key off and back on would clear the fault and imply the operator was ready to use the machine again.

I'm going to throw out a recent experience I had to deal with that had a similar problem.

I have a 22HP Kohler vertical engine with a hard startup after shutdown.

What I had to do was hold the choke plate to keep it from fluttering while cranking. Once I held the choke plate It would fire right up.

The problem was a leaking intake valve that had to be replaced, and the valve seat refinished.

changed out the key switch.
started and ran for 1 min
made it stall out via brake on and position arms engaged.
results still no fire, no spark at plugs.
mower was not hot.
i can usually get it to fire up next day.
oil temp switch ordered
looking to see if fuel solenoid causing the no spark condition
there is a stop solenoid on parts list, anyone had issue with it?
local dealer has no idea what's going on

Fuel solenoid only shuts off fuel supply , if it's a safety switch it will not allow the starter to engage

Okay, your credit card works. Most likely nothing to do with your issue.

This is a great clue. Figure out why spark vanishes.

This confirms no spark. What are you testing spark with?

Are you referring to the carb after-fire solenoid? If so, lots of people have. Still zero to do with spark.

You need a good open gap type spark tester. Not any Christmas light bulb waste of time and money tool. Something you can increase the gap stressing the coil/s.
