Why not reduce lawn thatch during the summer ?

The lawns have never been de-thatched. A gardener offered to de-thatch my lawns for $200, but refused to do it until the Fall. Why? "Because it will look bad for a few weeks". Huh?

Anyone know a sound reason of what time of year to perform this?

I did mine (was a new home owner) in the summer...once. My turf struggled for several weeks, had to water more frequently, got more weeds. Wait till fall or do in the early Spring would be my recommendation.
