Have a Vanguard 305447 0079-G1 on my Grasshopper. Exhaust valve seat has moved up in head. Guessing I need a new head. Which cylinder is #1?

On Briggs twins, #1 cylinder is usually on the starter motor side, but always the cylinder closer to the flywheel.

Results scroll down half page for your operators manual & illustrated parts list. Just the opposite, looked in my manual. When sitting in seat no. 1 cylinder is on left side & no. 2 cylinder is on right side next to starter.

"but always the cylinder closer to the flywheel." (is number 1)

Yes, don't give a hang where the starter is.

Briggs manual 272144 contradicts itself on the pages that show the cylinder numbering. The engine is turned around in another view, but the cylinder numbers were not corrected to follow. I looked in two other Briggs manuals that I have for twins and # 1 cylinder is marked as the closer one to the flywheel in both manuals. Manual 272144 also comments about #1 and #2 cylinders in one of the carb adjustment sections, but doesn't identify the cylinders.
