To me anything that is "intelligent" as a machine is sure to be a real pain for people to work on and operate.

I had the exact same problem with the belt I ordered from MTD for my LTX1046. Part number under the hood is 954-04219 and that is what I ordered. Same problem as you, the belt was too long. I went to my local belt store and asked to cross the CC part number with the Megadyne belts they carry. I forget what the Megadyne part number was, and it measured the same length as the MTD belt. So, I then brought my old belt to them (mine was still intact, not snapped) and I was sold a belt that fit.

Cadet, Husqvarna, Craftsman are all MTDs. the mower decks are identical. I had a craftsman and blew an engine. Bought a Husqvarna and my bagging system fit perfectly including all the bolt holes. I have replaced several belts, spindles and keepers. The deck has a rear tension spring that pulls the deck back. The spring attaches to the frame. It is hard as hell to pull. Makes sure it is attached. Also, the belt around the engine pulley is very loose. That is why they have belt keepers just behind the engine pulley. You said, it looked like it was too loose, but did you try it? This belt is so loose normally that it can fall off the engine pulley if the keepers are missing. Try it before you condemn it!

This spring I replaced the deck belt on my Cub, it lasted about 10 hours tops. I suspect that Cub Cadet branded belt was a cheap clone. Or perhaps MTD just got some really lousy belts. I really doubt that Cub Cadet or MTB makes their own belts, surely they get them from belt manufacturers. I noticed it was thinner than previous belts.
