What tool do I need?

Replacing a carb on my neighbors Troy-Bilt riding mower. It has a B&S 15hp single cylinder engine.

On the intake side of carb - it has two 7/16" nuts. Was able to remove both of nuts and remove the intake elbow. Now I'm left with the carberator studs which go all the way through carb into the intake manifold. Looks like it will be a specialized tool. What tool and size do I need to remove these two carb studs?

Will a small adjustable wrench mess them up?

They are called power washers. Or degreaser and scrub brushes plus a garden hose. Foaming glass cleaner, old paint brush and compressed shop air. Take your pick.

Getting at you need to CLEAN the engine like a NEW ONE prior to opening the engine up. Why? All that piled up grit and trash can and will fall inside the engine. Grit and sand can and will get to the rings and so on. Just like having surgery at the hospital. They CLEAN the area prior to cutting into us. CLEAN as in hospital CLEAN.

At least take an old paint brush and scrub it down first. All of us should have an old dusting brush in the tool box. Dust off your air filters and so on.
 
Double nut to remove the studs. Or a 7 or 8mm closed end wrench or 6 pointed only socket. No 12 point sockets here.
 
Tell your neighbor to clean the engine cooling fins while you have it opened up. These are air cooled engines.
 
Idiots. Those are not nuts those are studs with a 5/16 hex and it takes either a 5/16 deep well socket or just a plain ol 5/16 wrench
Just like those with the external Trox head that are E5.

BTW Slomo 8mm is the same as 5/16"

And if these are threaded into plastic only. Here is something to keep from cutting new threads. When you start the screws with light pressure turn as you are removing until drop off the edge of the current threads and then tighten as normal. It is the same with self tapping screw that already been installed.

Not directed toward you. I have spent the last 2 weeks dealing with people with the intelligence of a chipmunk.
