What Is the Best Blade Setting for a Healthy Lawn?

Hello everyone.

I've been trying to improve the overall health and appearance of my lawn, but I'm still unsure about the best cutting height for different grass types and seasons. Some people recommend keeping the grass longer, while others suggest shorter cuts for a cleaner look.

I recently started researching ideal lawnmower blade height and found plenty of conflicting advice online. Does the recommended height change depending on weather conditions, mowing frequency, or grass variety?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone with firsthand experience or professional landscaping knowledge.

On fescue, right at 4” is the correct height. Remember, many people mow grass way too low. Cutting too low stresses the grass, promotes weed growth, and causes burnout during periods lacking rain.

There are lots of answers.
First of all, know your grass type.
Second, go to your states extension website for turfgrass and match your grass type with their recommendations.
Does the height setting on your mower match the actual cutting height? If not, you will have to adjust the deck height to match the deck setting.
 
As a general rule; The amount of a plants root system, will be directly related to the above ground foliage.
Cut your grass short (scalping) and you reduce functional root systems = lower drought resistance.
Farmers with grazing livestock often "practice pasture topping" to encourage even/fresh growth, sunlight into sward to destroy nematode eggs , etc. The standard topping height is 100mm (4"):devilish:
 
depends on the type of grass. The only thing I can say about 4" is that we mowed at 3" for years. You mow to 3" then it grows to 4" before you mow again. You mow at 4" and it grows to 5" before you mow again. Our retired show lady dog was touching the grass when she pee'd with it mowed to 4". Withing one week she had pyometra (infection of the womb) and almost died. She needed emergency surgery. Cost a lot to save her life and damaged her kidneys, which is what she eventually died of a couple years later. I've always felt it was bacteria on the taller grass that got to her at the end of her season when the path to the womb is still open internally. If you have medium sized dogs I'd go with the 3" for fescue and bluegrass.
 
I have tried mowing different heights and have finally settled on 2 3/4" twice a week. I have a mulching kit and blades. Looks nice in my opinion. Neighbors on both sides of me scalp their lawns and I don't get it.
