On an engine this old, needs de-carboned. What is this? It is a must do maintenance item in your engine manual.
Pull the head, breather cover and the valves and CLEAN EVERYTHING. Piston face and head will be loaded with carbon. Valves need lapped in once cleaned. Head and block area need lapping. Every head I've pulled off is/was warped.
Doing this you will find several items as in restoring compression and all that carbon. Do you know how cylinder bores get all scratched up? Chunks of carbon flake off and get next to the bore and piston. Carbon is pretty hard stuff. Reason we ALL are to de-carbon every 5-7 years per our engine manuals.
I'm working on a Briggs Quantum L head now. Intake oil seal was loose on the valve. Valves were WAAAAAY out of spec from all the carbon. Started so easy before my 5 foot tall WIFE could start it LOL. Bet it was 100% leaking down. Spark plug was nearly fouled up and the gap closed it was running so poorly. Not really poorly just low compression. She was sucking down the oil with that valve seal loose. Need to check for a healthy spark once I get it back together.
