Most likely a worn out drive belt.. but we'll need more information to help you.
There should be a tag on the bottom of the seat with the model number, please post the model number so we can have a look at your mower.

as mentioned, your drive belt applies tension to the drive system, when it gets worn down it starts slipping and you lose speed, most commonly 1st gear
