I have a 42 inch cut Troy Belt lawn tractor and when you use it to cut with PTO engaged after a short time the PTO shifter shuts off why motor still running

Check the battery voltage engine off then again with the engine running.
Should be 12.5 or better off and 13V or better running.

A lot of amps needed to hold that coil closed
volts X Amps X square root/3 and all that electrical type stuff.
It could pull the voltage down to a point where the circuitry shuts off the PTO.
that's my opinion and I am sticking to it.
