This is my first Question

I was gifted this mower from a man older than me moving into assisted living, he has not used it for a couple years. With a good battery and oil and air filter checked it started right up, but as soon as I start to release clutch it dies, does not matter if it is a drive mode or neutral, does not matter if mower is engaged or not. The seat switch is disconnected under the seat, it will continue to run if parking brake is engaged, and I can get off it. If this is a simple fix the next question is service on the transmission, I don't have a book with this. Thanks all, I have been looking at the forum for a while but did not need help till now.
 
That is a rare find with a 5-speed and in good condition. You might find and owner manual on eBay and that would be a great help.

The problem sounds like the seat switch is not working and it has to be connected. Do not attempt a bypass.

This is and older Scott's (fertilizer company branded mower). I think they originated from the MTD line of riders. JD took them over later on.

The information under the back seat should give you some good information to look up the unit. Parts Tree online has practically anything you need for the chassis.

The engine ID information will be stamped into the valve cover of the B&S engine. These are great machines to find in well cared for condition.

I had one for years until the footrests quietly rotted away under my feet.
 
I forgot.... It is a 5-speed sealed transmission. No servicing other that possibly a drive belt and idler/tensioner pulleys.
 
Most likely it's the seat safety switch. It may be a two prong or four prong switch. Test continuity with your ohm meter. On the four prong, test the two outside at the same time and two inside at the same time. While holding the leads to the connections, manipulate the switch and observe your meter. You should see 0.
 
Thanks to you both, yes it was the seat safety switch, I have it going forward and backwards in all ranges now, not shutting off. The service mower led is flashing at me, I will sharpen the blades, but how do you get the warning to quit flashing?

Most auto reset after 2 hours of run time.
