I am working on this mower. The automatic choke is not working when the engine is warm. It cold starts just fine, but running it for 3 minutes and it will not start. Prop the choke open with a screwdriver and it starts just fine.
I have tried another thermowax and switched a used choke control and still have the problem.
I have replaced other thermowax units in Hondas. The thermowax has always been sealed into place with some type of RTV sealant and very difficult to remove. This engine there was nosealant and the thermowax seems to be loosely held in place almost a little sloppy loose.
When I run the engine cold starts just fine and let it run and quickly remove the air filter box and carb, the plunger on the thermowax is not extended very far at all.
I am wondering if loose fit of the thermowax is causing a lack of heat transfer and the plunger not extending.
This is happening with the thermowax I found in the engine and a replacement that I tried, and with the original choke and what I think is a good used choke control from a scrapped engine.
I am thinking that I might try warming the thermowax with a heat gun and see if it extends more fully when it is heated up
I am asking if anyone knows if there is a need for a high temperature RTV sealant to be used? Is there another heat transferring product that would be a better way to conduct the heat?
Another question has there ever been an issue with the size of the hole in the engine that the thermowax fits into being too large? I am hoping someone has had a similar issue and can reccommend a fix.
