tech tip - pressure test inline fuel shutoff valves

Looks like we all need to pressure test these cheap plastic inline fuel shut off valves. The 90 degree hose fitting cheapos are the worst at sealing when turned to off. Tossed over half my stash of valves, nothing but leakers.

James Condon posted up a video on his leakers. He also tossed a bunch of his valves. All credit goes to James for this tip. Nice video James.

As I preach on here, new isn't new anymore. Got to TEST everything.

I've had good luck with the Briggs that comes in the Briggs package.
Lots of clones that are no good. Actually become a fire hazard due to external leakage.
Had to throw all my clones away.
Really disgusting to have to pay $6 or more for a piece of plastic, but it can help keep gas from entering the crankcase and ruining a engine, but more disgusting to find out I paid for no good clones.

Hi Slomo,

As I recall it is about testing for adequate fuel flow, not pressure, but I understand what you mean. I have had good luck popping several aftermarket ones apart and clearing out the excess plastic flash that restricts the flow and then reassembling them. I only had one that would seep and I threw that one away.

These mass-produced plastic parts like this can create some real puzzling headaches.
 
Add say 7psi and see what you get. These cheapo Amazon junkers are terrible. They do not hold pressure and leak or not shut off when commanded.

I buy fuel shut off valves in bulk and have overall good results. If they are going to leak, it is often right after you install them. Not going to pay $6/ each versus $1 and change for the same basic part.

I hear ya'. You can get a 2 pack for 12 bucks for the above valve.

Shoot, if a good valve like the SCAG one will save you just he price of oil you made out. Won't take long to trash an engine with fuel diluted -20w oil.
 
Taryl Fixes All has a good video on these valves. He indicates that if there is a arrow indicating flow on them (going from failing memory), they are junk. Good ones are not directional, don't restrict flow and don't leak. He provides a manufacture name.

How much pressure did you use? They don't have an in-tank pump, so they normally experience almost no pressure and teh highest is whenm the tank is full.

I thought my valve was leaking, but it turned out that the fuel line had cracked.
