So I took apart the mechanism where the starter pawls retract. There was one weird piece of plastic in there that I thought might be causing sounds, so I tossed it and reassembled. Started it up, still rattley noise.
While it was running, I very slightly pulled the starter rope until the pawls stuck out just enough to make the slightly rubbing sound against the flywheel. It did not sound like the sound I'm hearing at all. So its gotta be something else but I have no idea what. Everything feels tight. I'm going to be mowing my lawn with it tomorrow. Maybe the sound will magically go away. But if anyone has any other ideas, I can try them out tomorrow.
