It all boils down to how much money and time the OP wants to put into it. A lot or a little. It almost sounds like the unit could be toast by his description of how it operates.

Just because there are experts here also doesn't mean all people want it expertly done per manufacture repair procedures at a high cost, or enough that it will run and be dependable for the unit's life. Sounds like not a lot of life on this one.

I had an old, old rototiller a while back with the gearbox that leaked. On that, I pumped the gearbox full of grease, with a little gear oil to thin it somewhat, put some cheap felt seals with washers to keep it snug on the shafts, and that thing lasted until I stopped gardening, and I sold it. All depends if you can get parts, and how much you want to put into it.

I'd also watch craigslist or somewhere for a different trans unit.
