I have a lawn tractor whose 12.5 hp briggs motor went belly up and have the opportunity to install a bigger motor around 18 hp. Will this mess up the rear end or is it an easy swap where the bigger mower wont do any damage?

Switching motors to a bigger hp should be ok, just:

make sure the motor mounting bolts line up in the same locations,

and that you use the same belt pulleys that is on the original engine.

switching from a 12.5 hp bs to a 17.5 hp koehler. The person selling the motor says that the shaft is a 1". If the bolt holes dont match, I can just drill new holes, correct?

You could, it gets a little trickier switching to a different brand engine.

You got to make sure that you get the motor located in the right position for alignment of the belts and belt guides. Some belts get so picky that they measure down to a 1/64 of an inch in length. So if you were off a little with the motor location, the belts might start slipping right away.

Also you will have to measure the shaft diameter size and style to see if the pulley switching will work.
