Nothing beats that freshly striped look. I've been doing alternating diagonal patterns this season and the neighbors keep asking how I get the lines so sharp. Biggest tip I can share is blade height matters more than the roller - I keep mine at 3 inches for cool season grass and the stripes just pop way better than when I was cutting at 2.5.
Also learned the hard way that dull blades kill your stripes. If the grass tips are shredded instead of clean cut, the blades don't lay over uniformly and the pattern looks washed out. I sharpen every 8-10 hours of mowing now and the difference is night and day.
