Is there any way to stop the 'invitation to join the forum'
spam ad from appearing over the name and password boxes
the minute I start typing into them, making them disappear
with no way of removing the Lawnmower forum spam, or
selfspam short of re-joining each time?

I may be wrong, but my understanding is, of you are logged into LMF with your username and password, the "invitation to join the forum" will not reappear after you leave LMF and return, as long as you do not clear your browser cookies or sign out of LMF. Or you can do what I do, simply close the popup when it appears.

Compared to some of the (censored) that appears on other sites, I don't find the popup here very annoying.

What pop ups!? I've never had one on this site! :thumbsup:

Sometimes the red x does not appear in the upper right hand corner of the pop up. (it has happened on the Mac). You can still close the box by clicking in the upper right even though the x icon is not there.

I would like to know what kind of virus malware protection you are using.

I doubt malware protection would block it from the host site,
my mac won't close it or move it, and it only appears when
I try to log in, blocking log in boxes, not after doing the rounds
to get in. I find this forum really glitchy, it only puts
about a third of my replies up (this one is attempt 2)
every succesful entry dumps me back out, into the furious
fight with spam invite to try logging back in. It hardly
seems worth the effort. Other forums just work.

Sounds very frustrating.....I have no idea, maybe Muhammad has some answers

I use Kaspersky Internet Security Suite on all our Windows Pc's. Have tried others like Norton, McAfee, etc. but prefer what we have now. Why do you inquire?

I have some issues as of late with malware and I'm working them out. After I get it resolved I need to take steps to see that it does not reoccur.
I have tried several different types of free software and it seemed just when you think your protected, something pops up.
My pc now logs me off as soon as I log on, apparently it's more difficult to fix than I originally thought.
I figured you must have your privacy settings fairly low based on your statement about cookies, and you seem somewhat knowledgeable regarding these things....just wanted another opinion.

IMO McAfee Sucks

I have none of the problems that the OP refers to.

We have two Vista PC's and two XP PC's, our ISP is Verizon...using IE 8 or 9 on all of them. Cookies are set to medium security.

About McAfee and Norton, used both of those for a time, found them to work ok but was VERY hard to remove all traces of their software in order to try another brand. AVG worked well on Vista, but on XP it wasn't very useful, Firewall kept going down. Webroot worked OK on both versions of Windows but sometimes failed to block malware such as fake security software, names like "Antivira Pro" would get thru and I would have to send queries to Webroot and update to latest software version. A real PIB.

Changed over to Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 early this year, love it, works in the background and when it blocks a threat it just gives you a tiny notice, unlike Webroot which practically screamed out loud "Hey look we blocked this threat".....

For what it is worth it costs me about $13 per PC for one year of Kaspersky ISS, I buy a CD from an Ebay seller, costs about $40 for a 3 PC package.

Kaspersky is one of the best at fixing computers with existing malware, I will probably pay a higher price to renew next year than $13 per PC, but IMO it is the best of it's type. "Free" security software is worth about what you pay for it....

If you can still see the login box, immediately click it. When the error screen comes up (because you didn't type anything in the box), you can login normally and ad-free. I'd suggest the 'remeber me' box, unless you're on a public computer.

Not perfect, but a workaround I use anyway.
