Tim, I apologize. I think I sent you in the wrong direction. The culprit is more likely the seat switch. The brake switch only comes in to play when you start the engine. It lets you send current to the solenoid and on to the starter. The seat switch does a few things. It requires you to be in the seat to energize the solenoid, like the brake switch. It also prevents you from starting when you have the blades engaged or from getting up from the seat while the engine is running and the blades are engaged. But it is supposed to let you get up from the seat while the engine is running so long as the blades are disengaged. I had a rider that had a brake switch that also had to be engaged to let me get off the seat with the engine running. Since you bypassed the brake switch without any change, I am guessing that yours is different and the issue is in the seat switch. It could be in the pto switch, but from what I have read today on other sites, the seat switch is the more likely problem. I would make sure the connectors are clean and I’d test the switch with a multimeter. Hope this helps.

Hi Oddjob, thanks for your thinking and proposels. I checked the seat switch and it is a simple two pole switch. It is on and off and it works fine (checked with multimetr) so I think this switch is not multi functional. There must be an other culprit, but I don’t know where to look.

Let’s start with the cause for your engine shutting down when you get up from the seat. Simply put, your coil is being grounded. However, your mower was designed so that it won’t ground out when you get up provided that you have the parking brake engaged and that you do not have the pto engaged. I assume you are not getting up with the pto engaged and that you are correct that the brake switch is working properly and the parking brake is keeping the button fully depressed. Then the only other path to complete ground to the coil is through the pto switch, (unless you have another safety switch on this mower, some do have a deck safety switch.). If the pto switch is always closed that would allow a path for ground to the coil.
You need to physically look at the pto mechanism and ensure the switch is being released when the pto is off. You also need to test the pto safety switch with your multimeter.
I’ve never had this issue so this is the first time that I have given the safety switch interlock system much thought. If it helps you, here’s what I learned and how I now think about it. The interlock system actually is two systems. One is simply a way to interrupt the flow of current from the battery to the solenoid. All the safety switches are wired in series between the battery and the solenoid, so any open switch will prevent the solenoid from closing and sending power to the starter. Thus, if you aren’t doing any one of the following: (1)stepping on the brake, (2)sitting in the seat, or (3) have the pto disengaged, you won’t be able to power the starter motor. The second safety system is designed to ground out the coil so as to prevent an unsafe operation, like leaving a mower running with blades turning while the driver is on the ground kicking a rock out of the way. There is a ground circuit that runs from ground to the coil that is interrupted by the safety switches and if the seat switch plus one other is closed at the same time, the ground circuit to the coil is completed and the engine shuts down.

Hi Tim Its security. If you want the engine to stay running, disconnect the switch under the seat. I know Stiga very well. I have ever had a Stiga Park and several villa"s. I repared them and sold them again.
