Looking into buying a used snapper with the model number in the title. The guy I'm buying it from doesn't have much information for me, I'm mainly looking for when this model would have been sold new and how much it would have sold for. Along with any experiences you guys may have had with this model, it seems to be in good condition and he's asking $60 for it. Thanks for any help you can give me!

That's a good mower and a good engine. Looks like a late '90s model, very similar to the one I bought new in 1998 for about $400. If it runs good that's a very good price. If u can post the s/n (actually just the first digit) I can tell you the year.

The serial number is 85358215, thanks for the info!

Do you currently still have the mower? You seem pretty happy with it so that's a good sign.

I would also be curious if you could more generally explain how to identify a snapper manufacture year by the serial number (is there a guide that explains what each number in the serial number represents?), as I'm in the process of shopping now. Thanks again!

Actually I sold it about 7 years ago, only because I was more interested in the older snappers. Pre 1990. But it ran perfectly the whole time I had it. No issues. Of course I kept it in the garage and maintained it. But yes it was a great mower.

As for the model/serial numbers, I inquired to snapper as to how to identify the year a mower was built. The info they gave me was that the first digit in the s/n indicates the last digit in the year it was built and the series number at the end of the model number would narrow down the decade, basically. For example: a model 21351PS with a s/n starting with a 4 is 21", 3.5hp, series 1 (built from 1983-1987 roughly) built in 1984. P is self propelled, S is electric start. Or a 21405PD with s/n starting with a 9 is 21", 4hp, series 5 (1988-89 roughly) built in 1989. Now commercial units labeled 21500C or 21500PC were series 0 from about 1979 all the way thru 91 or 92, something like that. Series 2 and 4 were blade brake clutch models from the mid to late 80s. After 1989 the series numbers increased so I would take a guess yours is a 1998 model.

Forgot...I do not know what the other 7 digits of the s/n represent. Snapper didn't mention anything about those. I guess because I only inquired into how to know when a mower was built. But that's a question worth asking them.

Thanks again! I called a local snapper dealer to ask a few of these questions and they weren't a fraction as knowledgeable as you, either that or they were just completely uninterested in helping me.

Always happy to help. And it was probably a bit of both with the dealer you talked to. I got my answers from emailing snapper directly. Any other snapper questions I could answer I'd be happy to do so.

Well I ended up purchasing it yesterday so it's possible I may have some more questions in the future that will be posted to this forum. To start with though, do you have any tips on maintaining these older snapper mowers? The one I got seems to be in good condition but I'm not sure if what preliminary checks/yearly maintenance I should be doing. Fairly new to lawn mower maintenance.
