Guy at work said his grandparents had a old Honda mower that was just sitting around taking up space and would be more than happy to give it to me just to free up the space. He had no idea what model it was though, but he brought it in for me today. Its a HR194. I was hoping it would be a 214, but hey, I'm not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth:wink: Anyways, they bought a new Honda 2 years ago, so its been sitting since then, they said it starts but dies. I'm guessing the carb just needs cleaned out and maybe a tune up. A quick inspection revealed that there are some chunks broken out of the center of the deck and the blade bolts were loose. I'm guessing the blade being loose is probably what hit the deck and broke it. The blade looks ok yet, but the bolts, while they came out ok, look like they should be replaced. I have a non running HRM215 sitting around that I'm hoping the blade bolts from it will work in this one. Havn't had any time to mess with it other than a quick inspection. My questions to you guys are, will the chunks missing out of the deck hurt it anything? and the pic I took of the intake side of the engine show a hose coming off the air cleaner, before the carburetor, should the other end of that be hooked up to something? The rest of the mower looks to be in pretty good shape. All in all, I can't complain for free.

That hose is the crankcase vent which goes into the block on the left side of the engine and as you can see the other end goes into the airbox basically so it does not vent into atmosphere (emissions). I cant see it in the pic but you will see a space where that hose fits into the block. You may need a new hose because that looks like it ripped or torn. I wouldnt worry about the cracks. Those happen on those cast aluminum decks mostly from hitting the front or people pushing them over a curb and dont lift it high enough and crack the deck or also hit a big rock or whatever. Just keep an eye on it but I wouldnt worry at all. I would change the oil use i belive those engines called for 10w40 (not 10w30 like all the new stuff if you check the manual) and spark plug ngk bpr5es a clean or install new air filter and oil the prefilter and shapen the blade and your set. Clean carb wouldnt be a bad idea and then set rpm to make sure its running to spec but you probably dont have to get that crazy i guess. Let me know how it is!

ok guys, I figured out part of the reason why it didn't want to start. I just wanted to remove the spark plug to see what part number I needed to get for it, and the spark plug boot and terminal pulled off the plug wire with little effort. I didn't have time to dig into it, I assume the wire is part of the coil? If so, will the coil from a HRM215 (GXV140) work on my little HR194 (GXV120?)? Just wondering cause I have a HRM215 sitting around that needs a carb and was just going to steal it off of that if possible.

My parts system says the coil on an HRM215 should work okay with an HR194. The part number for the HRM215's coil shows it was also used on many types of HR214 engines. Part number 03500-ZE7-063
