Scag Tiger Cub sparking

I recently purchased a used Scag Cub. It has a Kawasaki fh601v engine. I purchased it knowing it didn't start. Generally, it's just the solenoid or a carb issue. Today, I changed out the spark plugs, oil n filter, hydro oil n filter, battery and solenoid.

At the very end I installed the new battery. As I tried hooking up the black side, it sparked. Is there such a thing as putting the solenoid on backwards? All input in greatly appreciated!

Was it a real big spark that would melt the battery cables or a small spark that would not melt the battery cables. If small spark it could be a drain on the battery that would not burn anything up so you could find the problem. You didn't leave the key on before you hooked the battery cable up did you?
