I have a SCAG Sabre Tooth Tiger (SMST-72A S/N 6860257) 31HP Vanguard Gas Engine 72 inch cut.
The Rear Left wheel Hydraulic Spindle drives the Wheel Hub (that the tire-rim mounts too).
There is a 5/16" Key in the hub and the spindle, and a 1-1/2" Castle Nut with a Cotter Pin.
What is the toque the the Castle Nut should be torqued to?

1. The original LEFT REAR Wheel Hub cracked at some point, and the tapered hole opened up and the key fell out. I probably was mowing for a year or so before the spindle just spun in the Hub, and the wheel wobbled enough for me to see it.
2. Purchased a new Hub, and Key, seemed to still fit well on the spindle, and measured the torque of the right wheel and it seemed to be less then 20FTLBS, so I tightened it to 20FTLBS.
3. Mower moved and turned so much better for the first 4 hours of operation.

4. Then the wheel started spinning on the Spindle. Disassembled to find the Key completely sheared in half (half in the spindle, half in the hub).
5. Purchased a new Key and Hub, and tried a torque of 80FTLBs.
6. Lasted two hours, appears Cotter Pin sheared at the top and bottom, allowed the Castle nut to spin off, finally noticed wobble, lucky wheel didn't fall off.

7. Key completely lost, Castle Nut lost, now spindle threads damaged.

8. Ordered replacement Stens 025-507 Wheel Motor, Key, Castle Nut, and Hub for delivery around September 7, 2016.

Contact Scag by email for installation instructions if instructions do not come with parts. It sounds like your transaxles are overheating. Have you changed fluid & filter recently? Cooling fans look good? Belts? Hardware?
