Rough and uneven idle in Briggs & Stratton engine

My engine ran lovely for the first year or so, but now it does this uneven VROOM-vroom, weird surge thing. It starts fine and runs fairly even until it warms up and then starts this silliness. It seems to do it mostly when idling. It is a Briggs and Stratton engine, and I think I have maintained it pretty well- I think I use good gas, with no ethanol. I run the carb out of gas when I am done mowing. I change the plug at least once a year and the oil as scheduled, and clean it after each use. But I am not a small engine mechanic so I don't know what else to do. Can anyone help?

I wish I could say, "you need to do this and your problem will be solved" and the 'this' would be something that a non-small engine mechanic could do.

But it just doesn't work that way. Your problem probably resides in your carburetor and removing, disassembling, cleaning re-assembling and re-installing a small engine carburetor is 'small engine mechanic' work, which requires the right tools, knowledge and experience to do the job.

You can try youtube to see if you can find something on carburetor overhaul for your engine and see if it's something you feel up to tackling. Some replacement carburetors can be bought dirt cheap (usually China knock-offs) but others can be quite expensive or not available at all.

Taking it to a good, local mechanic may be your best option.

Ooh, I was mistaken. My other mower has a Briggs and Stratton engine. This one, the Honda (model) HRX217 54YA, has its own Honda engine. I can't find a HP but it does say 186 cubic meters. The engine serial # is: GJAAA-3135136 MX8. And the mower serial # is: MAGA-2443470. So??
