Rectifier Voltage Regulator Hunt

@Auto Doc's I am sure this is the oem stator - FIL kept all receipts and wires have original paint. Checking black wire to block is open for resistance and no ac or dc volts found. Only reading I get off black is half the ac volts when touched to the other stator yellow wires vs the yellows together. I think I will get the regulator that @StarTech recommended, ground it to the block and cap off the mystery black wire.
 
The stator only puts out half the AC voltage per yellow lead, that is normal. The black wire appears to be a ground at one the stator hold-down bolts or could it be an old ignition contact points kill wire?
 
The black wire is one of three wires that was in the plug going to the rectifier/regulator. Should I hook the black wire to the ground on the new regulator? I don't get if it's a ground, why is there no continuity to the engine block?
 
because it is the center tap of the coil. It acts like a ground between the two legs of the coil but it may not be grounded to the engine block for a reason.
 
I can only tell you what articles on the Internet and Google AI say to do to rewire from a 4 to a 3 wire system. Maybe someone here who has done it can do a better job of explaining it. Searching Google for "adapt 4 wire to 3 wire Kohler regulator - rectifier" yields lots of answers but I do not know from experience if they are correct. Electrons don't like mistakes.

Have a conversation with Google AI thru a standard Google query. It will ask you questions and explain things like you are talking to a person. I tried to post the conversation but the forum throws an error that it is too many words to post in a thread.

Hey friends, was doing some more googling and found this regulator:
The Tympanium 397809 (often branded as Briggs & Stratton 397809) is a 12-volt voltage regulator-rectifier designed for 8-amp quad circuit charging systems - so it's a 4 wire regulator like my original. As far as amps, only thing it goes to is for charging the battery, no other accessories. Do you think it would work?? Thanks again.

Ever thought about just pulling the flywheel to see where the wires are going? Also what about doing an ohms check?
